In July, Kansas Jayhawks basketball coach Bill Self was hospitalized after experiencing "some concerning symptoms."

The legendary coach then underwent a heart procedure and was expected to make a full recovery, with the university releasing a statement at that time saying he received two stents.

"The procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery," the statement read. "He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.”

On Friday, Self spoke about his health with college basketball insider Jeff Goodman, and it was an encouraging update.

Bill Self Reveals Health Update Weeks After Procedure

Goodman revealed his phone conversation with Self, and the Jayhawks coach seems ready to get back to work.

"Just got off the phone with Kansas coach Bill Self after his health scare a couple weeks ago in which he underwent a heart catheterization and had two stents placed for blocked arteries: Self said he received a clean bill of health from the doctors, has been back in the office daily, is able to play golf and is looking forward to the players returning in about 10 days," Goodman wrote on X.

Goodman also added that Self said he doesn't "have any restrictions coaching," which is certainly good news for Kansas and the college basketball world.

After the initial procedure in July, Self mentioned he was "excited to be home" and that the team had a "productive summer," while looking forward to the 2025-26 season.

Bill Self's Health Issues Prompted Retirement Questions

After Self's health scare in July, questions remained on how long he would continue coaching, or if he would return at all.

In 2023, Self missed the Big 12 and NCAA Tournament after being in the hospital with chest tightness and balance concerns.

Then, this July, he was hospitalized again and had to have two stents inserted.

Still, during the 2024-25 season, Self was honest as can be amid the retirement questions.

"That's not true at all," Self told Goodman about the retirement talk.

Self began his coaching career at Oral Roberts before going to Tulsa and Illinois. He has now been at Kansas since 2003, and has a record of 624-156 with the Jayhawks, including two national titles and four Final Four trips.

But, for now, Self isn't planning to leave, and the latest health update is an encouraging one.
