Melvin Council Jr. is getting ready for his first season under head coach Bill Self with the Kansas Jayhawks. As he trains over the summer, he’s not just focused on himself, he’s pushing his teammates too.

One of those teammates is five-star freshman Darryn Peterson. Peterson arrives in Lawrence with high expectations, looking to make an immediate impact and solidify his name in Kansas basketball history. He’s also aiming to improve his stock for the 2026 NBA Draft.

Andrew Lind, sports director in Topeka, Kansas, recently spoke with Council Jr. about his mindset this offseason and his expectations for Peterson.

"St. Bonaventure transfer Melvin Council Jr. on how he's treating have @KUHoops' Darryn Peterson as a teammate. 'That 5-Star stuff...goes out the window...He's very talented, but he know, that we're going to come for him...I'm going to make sure I get the best out of him.'"

Council Jr. is embracing a leadership role with the Jayhawks, making it clear that talent alone won’t define the season — work ethic and accountability will.

Peterson, an 18-year-old guard, played his final high school season at Prolific Prep in Napa, California, where he averaged 23.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. Before that, he spent a year at Huntington Prep in West Virginia and was a finalist for Mr. Basketball in Ohio as a freshman.

Peterson’s game has caught the attention of his teammates already. Loyola transfer Jayden Dawson praised him highly in a recent interview:

“He’s just different,” Dawson told The Star. “He’s one of those generational athletes you don’t come across often. It’s special. You can see it in his talent alone. This summer, he’s going to grow a lot. Not many players are as good as him.”

Bill Self echoed that excitement. Speaking to CBS Sports when Peterson committed to Kansas.

“Darryn’s the best player we’ve recruited since we’ve been here. He’s a special talent.” Peterson’s potential is undeniable, and expectations are sky-high." Self said.

Council Jr. brings proven college experience to Kansas. Last season at St. Bonaventure, he averaged 14.6 points per game and shot 81.9% from the free-throw line across 34 games. His season ended with a 75-56 loss to Kent State in the NIT on March 18.

Jayden Dawson adds even more experience. The former Loyola guard appeared in 32 games and posted 13.9 points per game. His season also ended in the NIT, where he dropped 35 points in a second-round win over San Francisco.

With Peterson’s raw talent and the veteran presence of Council Jr. and Dawson, the Jayhawks appear ready to turn the page after last season’s early tournament exit. Chemistry is building early, and the groundwork for a deeper run in 2026 is already in motion.
