On Saturday, December 20th, Mark Pope will lead his Kentucky Wildcats into State Farm Arena to take on the St. John’s Red Storm and Rick Pitino. Pitting former coach against mentor in a classic showdown worth watching before Christmas.
During Monday’s call-in show, Pope mentioned that Quaintance will likely be back on the court soon, possibly against the Red Storm or the Bellarmine Knights on December 23rd. His absence has undoubtedly been a big loss for the team during their defeats. His return will be a huge boost, bringing back the physicality and rim-protecting skills the Wildcats have been missing.

"We're down to days and hours. Maybe a week or so. Not weeks or months."
A Christmas gift that will delight Kentucky fans.
Much like Kentucky’s season, the No. 1 ranked transfer class has experienced its share of highs and lows, with plenty of room for improvement. The defense hasn’t matched the dominance of last year’s record-setting run, but perhaps a trip to Atlanta this weekend could help turn things around.

The team hasn’t been as sharp as Pitino would prefer, and dropping three games to ranked opponents hasn’t helped. Talented players like Bryce Hopkins, Zuby Ejiofor, Ian Jackson, Oziyah Sellers, Dillon Mitchell, and Joson Sanon are all hitting double figures, but the consistency just isn’t there. Since the 1-2 trip to Vegas, the Red Storm have stepped up their game, and with the Wildcats looming, it’s another chance to notch a win and boost the résumé.
When Dioubate plays like he did against Indiana, he turns this Kentucky team into a real threat. His 14 points, 12 rebounds, and relentless energy are exactly what the Wildcats need moving forward. It was the most fight and effort we’ve seen from this team all season, and with some momentum on their side. Another big opportunity awaits on Saturday.

With a healthy Jaland Lowe, Dioubate, and Quaintance, this Kentucky team will need all hands on deck with conference play looming.
Kentucky Wildcats coach Mark Pope defended by former coach Rick Pitino
Pope played for Kentucky in the 1995-96 season under Pitino, winning a national championship. He knows the standards here, and with the rough start to the season, no one understands him better than Pitino. Now they meet again, which is great for college basketball.

Two legends going head-to-head perfectly captures what makes this game so special. With a national audience tuned in, emotions will be running high as longtime fans of Pitino and Pope watch them face off—it’s truly priceless. The mutual respect and love they share for their programs make this a memorable day for both Kentucky and St. John’s basketball.

This is a special matchup between two storied programs from the SEC and Big East, with the chance for one to claim victory. But in this game, there’s no real loser—both teams win because the bond between coach and pupil is something rare and meaningful. The fans may have their own opinions, but for the coaches, the respect they share and the chance to compete against each other is a moment they’ll treasure for life.
Time to get it on!
