The No. 15 Kentucky basketball pulled off a huge win on Tuesday night at Rupp Arena in Lexington, as Mark Pope’s squad took down the No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers, 75-64. That was the second win this season by the Wildcats against the Vols and their 17th overall in the 2024-25 college basketball season.
However, the Wildcats received some bad news on the injury front during the second half of the Tennessee game, with Kentucky star senior and guard Lamont Butler suffering an apparent shoulder injury. It can be recalled that Butler had already missed three games this season with a shoulder issue.
Butler exited the game and was later declared out for the rest of the contest. Before he left, Butler had six points on 3-for-6 shooting from the field with four assists, three rebounds and three steals in 22 minutes.
“The second he went down, you could kind of see, as he extended out, that it just torqued his shoulder a little bit,” Pope said following the game (h/t Ryan Black of the Louisville Courier-Journal), “and it was just exactly what we didn’t want to do.”
Butler’s injury is another blow for Kentucky, which has only played seven games with everyone healthy this season. Nevertheless, Pope has done a solid job of keeping the Wildcats afloat. Kentucky has an 8-6 Quadrant 1 record, to date.
It remains to be seen whether Butler will need to miss time to deal with the injury. Kentucky basketball, which also improved to 6-5 in conference play, will have three days of rest before getting back to action on Saturday against the Texas Longhorns in Austin.
