There have not been many times in the past 35 years that Kentucky basketball could be considered an "underdog."
Kentucky has been one of the country's best and most consistent college basketball programs, one could argue, dating back to 1948.
This program boasts eight NCAA Tournament wins, but heading into its Round 1 matchup with Troy on Friday, the Wildcats aren't taking anything for granted.
Who cares if they are the No. 3 seed versus the No. 14-seeded Trojans? According to senior guard Koby Brea, the Wildcats are going into this one humble.
“We’re still going to continue to hunt. Who we’re playing against, we’re still going to have that underdog mentality,” Brea told reporters after an open practice on Thursday (h/t On3). “It’s good for us to have all these experienced guys from smaller schools, that’s going to help us a lot. We don’t look at it like [we’re playing] a mid-major team. For us, this is another opportunity to be ourselves and be the best version of ourselves, and take care of business. It’s an underdog mentality, for sure.”
Koby Brea says having transfers from smaller schools will help Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament.

Kentucky went 22-11 and finished sixth in the loaded SEC this season. It's not the hoops conference it has been in the past, which could be why the Wildcats don't feel like they can get ahead of themselves.
Perhaps it's head coach Mark Pope who is keeping Kentucky humble. Remember, he replaced John Calipari, who had become a legend and a national championship-winning head coach in Kentucky but went 1-3 over his last three NCAA Tournament trips. That included first-round losses to No. 14 Oakland and No. 15 Saint Peter's.
Wherever it comes from, this seems to be a new March Madness humility for Big Blue Nation.
