LSU's Shareef O'Neal, son of Shaq, enters transfer portal

LSU Tigers forward Shareef O'Neal intends to leave the school where his father, Shaquille O'Neal, starred three decades ago.

Shareef O'Neal is entering the transfer portal, according to a report from Stadium, after averaging 2.9 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 9.2 minutes per game during the 2021-22 season.

O'Neal began his collegiate career with the UCLA Bruins, but transferred to LSU in 2020 after his redshirt freshman season. While he came to UCLA as a highly touted recruit, he missed the entire 2018-19 season when doctors discovered a heart condition that required surgery. His mother later said on a VH1 show that the condition could've been fatal if it wasn't caught by doctors.

While O'Neal returned from the surgery to play sparingly for the Bruins before transferring to LSU, his time with the Tigers was hampered by a nagging foot injury. He didn't make his 2021-22 season debut until January and appeared in only 14 games.

His father, Shaquille, was the No. 1 pick in the 1992 NBA Draft after earning two All-American nods at LSU and winning the SEC Player of the Year Award twice. In 2013, he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
