Malik Thomas Transfer Portal: UVA Leads, Gonzaga Still Fighting for Former USC Guard

Malik Thomas just became one of the best guards available in college basketball after landing an eligibility waiver from the NCAA. Now officially cleared for one more season, the former San Francisco star immediately jumped to the top of multiple recruiting lists.

Virginia has emerged as the heavy favorite to land him, though Gonzaga is making things interesting. Here’s the latest on Thomas’ recruitment and where things currently stand.

Why Malik Thomas Got the Eligibility Waiver

Thomas’ waiver approval hinged on two key points:

  • He barely played as a freshman at USC, appearing in only nine games.
  • He missed significant time at San Francisco last season after a late-season arm injury.

The NCAA’s current willingness to grant additional seasons under these circumstances meant Thomas had a strong case. Now he’s free to play right away in 2025-26.

Why UVA Leads for Malik Thomas

Virginia coach Ryan Odom quickly positioned Thomas as a priority. With Reece Beekman gone, UVA desperately needs a proven guard who can score immediately. Thomas, at 6’5″, averaged 19.9 points per game at San Francisco last year and fits seamlessly into Odom’s more up-tempo style.

At UVA, Thomas would start alongside Jacari White and incoming freshman Chance Mallory. He would instantly become the focal point of Virginia’s offense, offering him both significant playing time and strong NIL earnings opportunities.

Gonzaga Still in the Mix

Gonzaga refuses to bow out quietly. The Zags lost multiple perimeter scorers after last season and view Thomas as an ideal fit in their fast-paced system. Coach Mark Few has personally led the recruitment, emphasizing Thomas’ familiarity with the West Coast Conference, where he dominated last year—including two standout performances against Gonzaga.

Gonzaga also offers proximity to home and continuity with Thomas’ established NIL connections, factors that keep the Bulldogs firmly in contention.

UNC and Other Schools Trailing

North Carolina briefly showed interest but seems to have pivoted to other targets. Baylor, Iowa, and West Virginia have made preliminary inquiries but clearly trail UVA and Gonzaga. Each of these teams offers playing time and NIL opportunities, but none match Virginia’s guaranteed role or Gonzaga’s national profile.

What’s Next for Taylor?

As of now, Virginia has the edge due to playing style, roster fit, and immediate minutes. Gonzaga remains firmly in the conversation, however, promising Thomas high-profile matchups and a chance at another deep tournament run. A decision is expected soon, but until it’s official, Gonzaga isn’t going anywhere.

Stay tuned for updates as Malik Thomas finalizes his next move.
