Meet Houston’s First Commit of the 2027 Class

Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars have earned their first commitment in the Class of 2027.

Montverde Academy (Florida) senior Oneal Delancy officially booked his commitment with the Cougars on Wednesday. The four-star combo guard is top-10 at his position nationally and the No. 10 overall recruit in Florida.

Delancy, who becomes Sampson’s sixth top-50 recruit across his last three recruiting classes, is coming off a Peach Jam title run with the Florida Rebels. The Saint Petersburg, Florida, native averaged 15.9 points per game at Peach Jam, headlined by uncommitted five-star point guard Cayden Daughtry with 33 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for the Rebels.

Delancy enters the Houston program as a disciplined scorer and rebound threat around the rim, but could benefit from 2-3 years of college ball, and as he’s on track to turn 19 this fall, it won’t take long for that frame to come into form.

The Cougars delivered an enthralling national title run during the 2025-26 campaign, including a 65-63 loss to Florida and Walter Clayton Jr. in the final seconds of the NCAA National Championship Game in San Antonio earlier this spring. Notable NBA Draftees Kingston Flemings, Chris Cenac Jr. and Milos Uzan are all out the door.

Another potential question of Delancy’s commitment is whether Sampson decides to return for the 2027-28 campaign, but the 70-year-old Cougars head coach made it clear earlier this year he’s as excited as ever to be in the college basketball sphere.

Houston currently has the inside track on two more 2027 guards, four-star Ohio native Darrell Davis and four-star Texas native Payton Jones, to complete a potential freshman trio in the near future. Whether Delancy’s commitment moves recruiting along remains to be seen, but given his recent Peach Jam performance, it’s a solid start to the class.
