Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May is leaving no stone unturned. He’s even going after former rivals of the Wolverines in his efforts to get the program back on track.

Davis Moseley, a Michigan basketball insider, reported on Saturday night that the Wolverines are in contact with Roddy Gayle Jr., a 6-foot-4 wing who averaged 13 points per game for Ohio State last season.

Michigan fans were excited about the hire of Mike Boynton — the former Oklahoma State head coach — and his hire could pay off in the recruitment of Gayle. Both are from the New York area. Those ties could be a factor. Georgia, Louisville, Alabama, Clemson, Georgetown, BYU, Pitt, and Oklahoma are all in the mix.

Gayle shot just 29 percent from 3-point range last season but made 43 percent of his triples as a freshman. Yet, he made 51 percent of his 2-pointers on 7.2 attempts per game, averaged 3.2 assists per game, and shot 83 percent at the free throw line on 4.3 attempts per game.

Moseley reports that Gayle is near the top of the board for Dusty May. It makes me feel like Alijah Martin might not be the sure thing some Michigan fans think he is. We’ll see though.

Notre Dame transfer to visit Michigan basketball

Michigan is also in the mix for 6-foot-10 forward Carey Booth, a Notre Dame transfer. Booth only averaged 6.3 points per game last season in 20 minutes per game for the Irish, but he’s got potential. He’s a top-50 transfer according to 247 Sports and ranked 57th overall in the 2023 class. He also had eight games with multiple 3-point makes even though he shot just 29 percent.

The potential is there and in Dusty May’s system, he could be a star. Booth is going to make a jump in his second year, especially under a coach like May. Booth would get to shoot plenty of 3-pointers and Michigan would get a talented big with three years of eligibility.

Booth will visit Michigan soon according to Moseley, so the Wolverines are a real factor. Ohio State and Illinois are also in the mix so stay tuned.
