Michigan basketball to host transfers for visits, plus new targets

People weren’t lying when they said that new Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May is a hard worker. The Wolverines have been extremely active in the transfer portal and with as many as nine open scholarships, they need to be.

You can start to feel the momentum building though. On Sunday, former FAU center Vlad Goldin was projected to the Wolverines. He’s now received two crystal ball projections for Michigan basketball.

According to Davis Moseley, Goldin will visit Michigan basketball this weekend. He won’t be the only transfer to visit either. Danny Wolf, another 7-footer (from Yale) is also expected to be on campus, along with Connor Essegian from Wisconsin.

What these visits mean for Michigan basketball

Goldin and Wolf have offers according to Moseley. Essegian doesn’t have one yet but that could change this weekend. Indiana is still in the mix but getting those three on campus bodes well.

Michigan basketball fans are probably wondering about Johnell Davis. He tested the NBA draft waters last season and played in the G-League camp. He probably will again and could do well enough to get drafted. If he’s back though, the vibes are good for Michigan.

New transfer portal contacts

Yet, there are some other guards to know. Moseley reported that Michigan has also made contact with Oklahoma State transfer Javon Small. He averaged 15.1 points per game to go along with 4.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season. Mike Boynton coached him, so there’s a connection. However, since he just finished this third year of college, he’s not an ideal fit — he might lose credits if he does transfer.

Kobe Elvis from Dayton has also heard from Michigan, according to Moseley. Elvis averaged 9.4 points and 3.5 assists last season. He’s a 37-percent 3-point shooter for his career and could help fill a role in the backcourt for Michigan as a reserve or a starter. Only five guys can start and May doesn’t have a single guard on the roster right now with college experience.

Guys like Essegian and Elvis, who would be a grad transfer could help fill that void. Visits are a strong indicator of how serious both sides are in moving forward and that will be something to watch. Making contact is one thing. But getting a player on campus is another and it will be interesting to see who else ends up visiting Ann Arbor.
