Mizzou Center Enters Transfer Portal Seeking Extra Year of Eligibility

After just one season with the Tigers, center Josh Gray is leaving Mizzou and entering the transfer portal, according to  Pete Nakos of On3.

The 7-footer averaged 3.2 points and a team-high 5.3 rebounds in 33 games for Mizzou this past season.

Gray’s decision may come as a surprise to many, as he appears to have exhausted all of his collegiate eligibility. However, the veteran big man may be entering the portal in hopes of being granted an extra year.

Gray began his collegiate career at LSU, appearing in only 10 games during the 2020–21 season which was disrupted by COVID-19. The abbreviated season could make him eligible for an additional year of competition.

If approved, the Brooklyn native would play his sixth season of college basketball at a new school.

The move will mark Gray’s fourth program in six years. After LSU, he transferred to South Carolina, where he spent three seasons and appeared in 88 games for the Gamecocks before joining Mizzou ahead of the 2023–24 season.

Earlier this year, Gray praised the culture that head coach Dennis Gates had built at Missouri, saying, “Everything that I've absorbed here, that I've got to witness and be a part of, it's been great ... I wish I had more time."

Had he remained in Columbia, Gray likely would have filled a similar role next season to the one he held this past year.

Mizzou recently added Oklahoma center-transfer Luke Northweather prior to Gray's exit, however the Tigers are still expected to stay active in the portal as they have three scholarship spots open.
