NBA Draft Scouting Report: Houston's LJ Cryer
USA TODAY Sports

LJ Cryer

Guard | Houston

Height: 6'1” | Weight: 185 lbs

2023 Draft Age: 21.70

Prospect Profile

In three seasons at Baylor, Cryer has continued to develop into one of the best shot makers in the country. With the ability to adapt to what his team needs on any given night, he’s productive in nearly every role. Being effective alongside NBA caliber guards is no problem for Cryer, as he’s produced at a high level next to several at the college level. With championship experience, he’s ready to make an impact in the NBA from day one.

Before transferring to Houston next season, Cryer is testing draft waters, where he could be a quick riser. While he isn’t a jumbo guard, he is highly skilled and shouldn’t have a problem transitioning to the next level. He shines in big moments, which has proven especially true in the postseason. The Big 12 is one of the best conferences in the county, and Cryer has been a premier guard in that group of teams for a while now. A proven scorer, he’s reliable from the line and gets there with good frequency. He’s an elite 3-point shooter as well, which is exactly why he’s an easy fit at the NBA level. Any player that lacks positional size in the modern NBA must be a top-notch shooter, and Cryer is just that.

The 21-year-old is fantastic in half court sets as a spot-up shooter, but can also score off the bounce. When it comes to getting a bucket, there’s few better than him at the guard position. He’s highly efficient on the perimeter as well as in the midrange, with a quality package of runners, floaters and jumpers.

While his assist numbers might not be the highest, Cryer is also an underrated facilitator. At the NBA level, he should be able to play at either guard spot.

The Katy, TX product was a huge recruit that’s always been destined to make it to the NBA. Both of his parents were college athletes, so it’s no surprise that he’s been one of the top athletes in Texas his whole life.
