NCAAB betting: 5 best bets for Tuesday's college basketball slate

I hope you were with us over the weekend as we went 3-2, another winning outcome for these best-bet articles (no losers yet). Yes, I was way off with Marquette and Auburn, but if you lose, you lose, it doesn't really matter if you are close, right.

Tonight (Tuesday) we have a pretty good slate of action across the major conferences, yes, that is including the Mountain West Conference this season. The MWC is tracking to get double the number of teams in the NCAA Tournament this season.

Best Bets for Tuesday, Feb. 20

Connecticut Huskies @ Creighton Blue Jays
8:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports
Spread: Connecticut -2.5

The Huskies were dominant over the weekend, beating Marquette in a way reminiscent of their run to the championship last season. Now they are on the road, but is there really a reason to doubt the team that is a unanimous No. 1 right now. The basic numbers are in their favor too, they are 6-1 SU as a road favorite this season (5-2 ATS). I am more convinced by the way they beat Creighton at home, a game in which big man Donovan Clingan was not much of a factor off the bench.

Recommended Pick: Connecticut. Winning on the road is tough and the Huskies are probably overvalued but we still only need them to be one possession better than Creighton tonight. I think you have to take that bet (otherwise take Creighton to upset).

Baylor Bears @ BYU Cougars
9 p.m. ET, ESPN

Spread: BYU -4.5

BYU has acquitted itself pretty well in its first season in the Big 12. It got off to a rocky start (2-4 including a loss at Baylor), but the Cougars have rallied and most have them firmly in the NCAA Tournament, right now. Offense is the name of the game and I am leaning into their splits here; they score 13 ppg more at home and give up 7 ppg fewer at the Marriott Center. They can be in a position to salt away a win at home against the Bears. When they win at home (just a couple of losses), no program has been within six points.

Recommended Pick: BYU. I do hope we get this number lower to something like three but I like the home side with revenge.

San Diego State Aztecs @ Utah State Aggies
9 p.m. ET, Fubo

Spread: Utah State -2.5

Massive game in the Mountain West Conference tonight. These are the top two teams in the standings at 9-4, and a win by San Diego State might lock it up given the fact that the Aztecs won the earlier meeting between these two programs. SDSU is again one of the better defensive teams in the country, but when the market has the Aztecs as an underdog you should probably listen, as they are 2-4 SUATS in that role this season. The Aggies are more balanced, and they made 50% of their two's the first time these teams met. They could not connect from deep but they should shoot it better at home.

Recommended Pick: Utah State. The Aztecs are the team everyone remembers but these teams are pretty even, especially in conference play. The home side within a possession to win is the play.

Iowa Hawkeyes @ Michigan State Spartans
7 p.m. ET, Peacock
Spread: Michigan State -9.5

Michigan State has been riding that line of NCAA worthiness all season long. They are at Purdue in a couple of weeks, but other than that they should be able to run the table and extend their streak of appearances. The computers like MSU a lot. Meanwhile, Iowa needs to do more to build its resume. It is in front of them if they can win some games they are not supposed to on the road, like this one. They are the worst defensive team in the Big Ten, and that is hard to ignore, even though Michigan State has struggled with consistency.

Recommended Pick: Michigan State. This is my least favorite play of this five-pack, though the Spartans' last five wins have all been by eight points.

Syracuse Orange @ NC State Wolfpack
7 p.m. ET, ESPN

Spread: NC State -5.5

These teams have similar profiles. Syracuse won when they met earlier in the season and it will not look good if the Wolfpack lose twice, including at home to the Orange. Syracuse guard Judah Mintz shot 20 free throws in that game. That is five more attempts than he has had in any game this season and only once all season has he had that kind of free throw rate on the road. With freebies likely declining away from the JMA Wireless Dome (Carrier Dome), NC State is very likely to flip the script tonight.

Recommended Pick: NC State. The Orange are solid at home and bad on the road (1-5 SUATS as a road underdog). I don't love NCSU but fading the Orange is the smart play here.
