New Mexico Sends Parting Message to Rick Pitino's Son After Unexpected Departure

Rick Pitino and St. John's entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed after an incredible season in the Big East.

His squad suffered an upset loss in the round of 32, falling at the hands of John Calipari and the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Rick Pitino's son, Richard Pitino also led New Mexico to the NCAA Tournament, but the Lobos were also dealt a loss in the round of 32, falling to Michigan State.

Following the season, Richard Pitino accepted a job as the head coach of Xavier, leaving the Lobos after coaching New Mexico from 2021 to 2025.

After departing from the Lobos, New Mexico's Director of Athletics, Fernando Lovo posted a message for Richard Pitino.

Lovo shared his gratitude for Richard Pitino while sharing an encouraging message with Lobos fans.

Richard Pitino has been climbing the college basketball ladder for the past two decades, following in his father's footsteps.

While he's currently the head coach at Xavier, Richard Pitino also previously spent time at Minnesota, FUI, Louisville, Florida, Northeastern and Charleston.

Richard Pitino and Rick Pitino will now be competing against one another, both coaching in the Big East. Xavier will be the challengers, as Rick Pitino's St. John's Red Storm won the Big East Tournament this season.
