The Texas Longhorns visited the Marquette Golden Eagles in Milwaukee on Wednesday night in a highly-anticipated non-conference battle between two top-12 teams, but the end result had anything but thrills.

No. 8 Marquette, led by former Texas coach Shaka Smart, got a season-high 28 points from guard Tyler Kolek, who sparked a late rally to end the first half to lead the Golden Eagles past the No. 12 Longhorns, 86-65.

Texas (6-2) is now 0-2 against ranked opponents this season, and didn't live up to its No. 12 ranking. The Longhorns got a team-high 25 points from guard Max Abmas while Chendall Weaver added 10 points off the bench.

Along with his game-high scoring total, Kolek had eight rebounds and six assists, both of which led Marquette (7-2). The Golden also got double-digit scoring efforts from Kam Jones (17 points) and Chase Ross (10 points).

After putting together an 8-0 run, the Longhorns trailed 29-28 with 2:24 left in the first half and were in position to take the lead into halftime. But thanks to the magic of Kolek, Marquette turned a one-point game on its head in a blink in the final 2:24 of the half, and ended up never looking back. He highlighted a 13-0 Golden Eagles run with three triples, including two in the final 44 seconds, to give Marquette a 42-28 lead headed into halftime.

After falling behind 3-0 in the opening seconds, Abmas hit three straight triples to give the Longhorns a 9-3 lead. Despite going scoreless for a four-minute stretch, Texas led for most of the first 10 minutes in a back-and-forth affair that saw both sides fail to find any offensive consistency.

Then momentum started to shift, and Marquette took control. The Golden Eagles went on an 11-0 run to build a 29-20 lead, but the Longhorns had an electric sequence of plays and got two more jumpers from Abmas to cap an 8-0 run.

This was followed up by Kolek's terrific sequence, which served as preview for how the rest of the game would go.

Despite a spirited effort in the first half, including 17 points from Abmas, the Longhorns' suddenly found themselves in a sizeable hole.

This deficit only grew once the second half began.

The Golden Eagles continued to click on all cylinders coming out of the locker room and the Longhorns had no flow on offense to keep pace.

Marquette build its lead up to as much as 32 down the stretch in a game that felt well in hand for the majority of the second half.

The Longhorns will look to recover from the worst loss so far this season when they take on Houston Christian on Saturday.
