North Carolina reaches out to mid-major transfers

With the NCAA Tournament upon us and North Carolina having missed out on the Big Dance, roster movement and the beginnings of the 2023-2024 season have come early.

As Tyler Nickel and Justin McKoy have announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal, Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball coaching staff have reached out to two potential newcomers for the Tar Heels.

According to Jake Weingarten, founder of Stockriser.com, North Carolina has reached out to Towson transfer Nick Timberlake. Timberlake has spent the past five seasons with the Tigers and has one year of eligibility after redshirting in 2018.

This past season, Timberlake averaged a team-high 17.7 points, while adding in 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists. The Braintree, MA native was efficient from the floor, shooting a career-high 45.5 percent and 41.6 percent from three.

Experience and shot-making are a big plus that Timberlake could bring to Chapel Hill, as he has played in 122 games and shot 37.9 percent from three for his career.

Shortly after the news broke that North Carolina had reached out to the CAA transfer, it was also revealed that they had been in contact with Brown transfer Paxson Wojcik.

Wojcik is another guard on the radar for the Tar Heels after spending four seasons at the mid-major level. The Charleston, SC native spent two seasons at Loyola-Chicago before transferring to the Ivy League in 2021.

As a senior, Wojcik was the second leading scorer for the Bears, averaging 14.9 points per game on a career-high 46.1 percent shooting. The 6-foot-5 guard converted on 38 percent of his shots from beyond the arc and pulled down. 7.2 rebounds per game.

During the 2021-2022 season, Brown visited Chapel Hill for a non-conference affair, where Wojcik poured in 14 points and six rebounds.

Now, thanks in part to the Ivy League rule that athletes may not participate as a graduate student, Wojcik may wind up finishing his collegiate career in Carolina blue.
