Ohio State Buckeyes hit with rough news right after potential program changing win they received
Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch-USA TODAY NETWORK

Last week was a big one for the Ohio State Buckeyes, as they landed their highest-rated recruit since Jared Sullinger back in 2010. Securing five-star forward Anthony Thompson was a major win for the program, and he’s the kind of player who could make an immediate impact in Columbus. The commitment vaulted Ohio State’s 2026 recruiting class into the national top 10—but that’s no longer the case following the latest news surrounding the program.

Ohio State loses four-star PG Marcus Johnson

On Monday evening, Marcus Johnson announced that he would be reopening his recruitment and decommitting from Ohio State’s 2026 class. Johnson had been committed to the Buckeyes since April 2024, during his sophomore year of high school. Now, the No. 4 point guard in the class of 2026 is back on the market.

Johnson, a 6-foot-2 left-handed guard from Garfield Heights (OH), is known for his scoring ability and playmaking skills. He is also the cousin of former Ohio State guard Meechie Johnson, who played three total seasons with the Buckeyes across two stints before transferring back to South Carolina after last season. Marcus Johnson currently holds offers from programs such as Alabama, Illinois, Oklahoma, and LSU, among others.

Along with Thompson, Ohio State’s 2026 class still includes four-star forward Alex Smith. Head coach Jake Diebler and his staff will now need to pursue another point guard to fill the void left by Johnson’s departure—a significant need, given that Bruce Thornton is entering his final season in Columbus. It’s unfortunate timing for the Buckeyes, coming just a week after adding a marquee recruit in Thompson. What looked like the foundation of a special class now requires some retooling, and Diebler and his staff will have their work cut out for them as they look to find a replacement for Johnson.
