The Ohio State men’s basketball team has undergone a bit of a roster transformation this offseason after missing the NCAA Tournament for a third straight year.

Ohio State, led by Jake Diebler, has been hitting the recruiting trail hard this summer, focusing on the classes of 2026 and 2027.

A big visit is on the horizon for the Buckeyes as they prepare to host one of the top recruits in the country.

Five-star forward set to visit Columbus

According to Lettermen Row, the Buckeyes will receive a visit from five-star SPIRE Academy (OH) forward Jaylan Mitchell on August 1. Ohio State extended an offer to Mitchell on June 15, and it didn’t take long for him to plan a visit to campus.

Mitchell is ranked as the No. 9 player nationally and the No. 3 power forward, according to the 247 Sports Composite. The 6-foot-7 forward currently holds offers from schools including Illinois, Maryland, Memphis, and Notre Dame.

Having SPIRE in-state is a win for the Buckeyes, especially since they recently hired former Montverde Academy head coach Kevin Boyle. After Boyle took over at SPIRE, Mitchell transferred from Indiana to play under him.

Ohio State does not yet have a commit in the 2027 class, though they do boast the No. 4 ranked 2026 class with two commitments. Four-star guard Marcus Johnson and forward Alex Smith are two in-state recruits secured by Diebler and his staff.

Getting Mitchell on campus is a big step, and that visit is set to happen. Ohio State now has the chance to make a strong impression on the talented recruit.
