Oklahoma Sooners are bringing back a former fan favorite, but this time it's to be on the coaching staff

The Oklahoma Sooners basketball program seems to be headed in a much more positive direction than they were towards the end of SEC conference play this last season. I mean, after that loss to LSU at home, it felt like the world was falling apart.

Since then, they have killed it in recruiting, and they have added Trae Young as their GM, who has donated $1 million to NIL. Now, they are adding a former fan favorite to the coaching staff.

Sooners adding former fan favorite to the coaching staff

Rashard Odomes, a former 6'6" guard who played basketball at OU from 2015 to 2019, is set to return back to Oklahoma in 2025. Over his four years at OU, he appeared in 113 games, starting 70, and averaged seven points, three rebounds, and a little over one assist per game. He wasn't a star or a widely known player, but he was a player that fans liked.

He was part of OU’s Final Four team led by Buddy Hield, but saw limited action. In his sophomore year, he started all 30 games, averaging 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists while shooting 48.7% from the field. He had a standout game with 29 points and 10 rebounds against Oklahoma State, which, of course, is a huge reason why he is a fan favorite still today. Any time you can obliterate OSU in a Bedlam battle, the fans will love you.

In his junior year, Odomes was a team captain, alongside freshman star Trae Young. So, it's even cooler that he got to play with two of the best Sooners players of all time. I'd say he has that going for him in seeing what it takes to get to the NBA. As a senior, he scored a team-high 20 points in a first-round NCAA Tournament win over Ole Miss. After graduating with a human relations degree, he pursued a professional career overseas.

And now, he is helping Porter Moser. According to Bob Przybylo of On3, Porter Moser, the current head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners men's basketball team, is adding Odomes to his coaching staff.

"OU means a lot to him," Moser said. "From the people that I talked to when he was here, everyone talked about his toughness and his energy. That’s everything that I’m about.” - Bob Przybylo, Twitter.

The Sooners are headed in a great direction, and this addition to the staff should only help them. Getting a guy who has been in the same exact situation as these kids, not too long ago, is going to be key.
