After a disappointing season at Kansas State, star guard Dug McDaniel entered the transfer portal once again last week. Despite only scoring 11.4 ppg last season, there is still strong interest in the senior guard. Some power 4 teams and high-end mid-majors are putting their hats in the ring for McDaniel’s services.
The leader in the clubhouse right now is Memphis. McDaniel has already visited Penny Hardaway and the Tigers. This would be a great fit. Memphis is looking to rebuild after many portal losses, including PJ Haggerty, who recently announced his intent to transfer. However, McDaniel will likely have a high price tag, which Memphis may be unwilling to pay.

Another program that will likely push for McDaniel is Georgetown. The Hoyas recently lost point guard Jayden Epps to the transfer portal and will need a starting-caliber guard to replace him. Additionally, when he was in the portal last year, Georgetown attempted to bring in McDaniel. This means he already has a connection with the current staff. Finally, McDaniel is from Washington, DC and went to St. Paul VI High School in northern Virginia. One of his high school teammates, Deshawn Harris-Smith, recently transferred to Georgetown, which doesn’t hurt the Hoyas’ chances. Overall, there are many factors pulling McDaniel back home, it depends on how hard Cooley and his staff push.
A final team that may pursue McDaniel is Maryland. The Terps lost their entire roster after Willard’s departure and are in need of quality players. They did not pursue him last year, but this season they may be more inclined to give him a look. Like Georgetown, Maryland, would be a homecoming for McDaniel. Additionally, he has experience in the Big Ten from his two seasons at Michigan. It will be interesting to see if Maryland pursues McDaniel because the Terps’ new coach, Buzz Williams, has not emphasized recruiting the DMV area.
