The college basketball world was dealt heartbreaking news this Saturday morning.
St. John's has confirmed that Derek "DJ" Southerland, an alum who attended just about every sporting event at the university, has passed away. He was just 29 years old.
Southerland, who went to Archbishop Molloy High School, was loved by the St. John's community due to his incredible spirit. There's no question he'll be missed.
"St. John's Athletics is devastated to hear of the passing of Derek "DJ" Southerland. A double alumnus of St. John's, member of the SJU-TV Production team and devoted fan of all Red Storm athletic programs DJ was a fixture at all Johnnies home games," the Red Storm wrote. "He brought a contagious energy and spirit to the crowd at every game he attended and always carried a bright smile."
After this statement was released by St. John's, countless people shared kind words about Southerland.
"A gut punch to learn of the passing of @DSPNSJU," FOX broadcaster John Fanta said. "DJ was an outstanding person who was beyond dedicated to St. John’s University, the athletic teams across the board & the SJU community. Always waited around after a game to say hello & was a man for others. RIP to a class act."
"This is terrible news! DJ was such a nice kid. And he loved everything about STJ sports. My heart goes out to his family," one person wrote.
"Prayers to DJ's family through this unbelievably difficult time," another person commented.
Southerland was at the Big East Tournament just a month ago to witness St. John's capture its first conference title under Rick Pitino. He also attended Opening Day at Citi Field for the New York Mets.
St. John's will share details about a tribute for "DJ" in the near future.
Our thoughts are with Southerland's loved ones.
