Purdue and Matt Painter agree to contract extension

Matt Painter has been one heck of a coach for the Purdue Boilermakers' men's basketball program, and the powers that be in West Lafayette want to keep him around for a long time.

Painter has been the head coach at Purdue since 2005, and he boasts a 501-224 record. That's a winning percentage at Purdue of .681. He's taken the Boilermakers to the NCAA Tournament 17 times, and that includes a Final Four run in 2023-24.

At this point, what's another five years? According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), the 56-year-old head coach and Purdue agreed to a contract extension that will keep him around through 2030-31. Painter is also getting a raise, and he'll be eligible for certain performance bonuses.

“Under Matt Painter’s leadership, Purdue Men’s Basketball has established itself as one of the nation’s premier programs through its success on the court and commitment to excellence in all areas,” said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tommy McClelland in a statement. “The culture Matt has built, grounded in a shared pursuit of excellence, is reflected in the program’s 106-game sellout streak at Mackey Arena and the tremendous support Boilermaker fans and donors provide at away and neutral-site games across the country. We are proud to have Matt leading our program now and into the future. We remain committed to supporting his efforts to sustain our incredible success on the court, in the classroom and throughout the community.”

Matt Painter has been an elite head coach for the Boilermakers

Painter is a five-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, and he was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches' National Coach of the Year in 2018-19. Since the start of the 2022-23 season, Painter and the Boilermakers have racked up 117 wins, which ranks fourth nationally.

He's got the Boilermakers playing elite basketball, so this contract extension had to have been an easy decision for Purdue. That's not to mention the fact that Painter was a point guard at Purdue from 1989 to 1993.

“Purdue is a very special place for me, and it’s an honor to continue to be the head basketball coach at my alma mater,” Painter said. “I’m humbled that the Purdue administration continues to put their faith in me to lead this program, and am excited to continue to elevate our program with class and strive to reach all of our goals on and off the court.”
