As the 2024-25 season approached, many Chicago Bulls fans agreed that the front office needed to focus on retaining its 2025 draft pick given the lack of potential stars on the current roster. The Bulls owe their 2025 first-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs as part of the DeMar DeRozan sign-and-trade deal. However, the pick is top-10 protected, meaning the Bulls will most likely retain it if they finish in the bottom third of the league this season.

The 2025 NBA Draft class, headlined by Duke forward Cooper Flagg, is regarded as one of the best in the last decade. Employing a mix of defense and instincts, Flagg is the kind of talent that can change the trajectory of a franchise.

Cooper Flagg

Bio: Freshman | Duke | 6'9" | 205 pounds | Forward

Stats: 16.6 points | 8.6 rebounds | 4.1 assists | 43.5 FG% | 23.3 3P% | 69.6 FT% | 1.6 Steals | 1.4 Blocks | 2.6 Turnovers (8 games played)

Analysis

Cooper Flagg is a versatile wing who utilizes his high IQ and athleticism to impact the game. He can effortlessly get to the rim and then get a stop on the defensive end. Flagg’s jumper and handles need improvement but aren't significant concerns.

His tenacity to chase rebounds allows him to apply pressure on opposing defenses in transition, which leads to him scoring or creating opportunities for his teammates. Flagg is ready for the physicality the NBA demands based on glimpses of Team USA practices.

NBA Comparison

Cooper Flagg resembles an early-career version of Kawhi Leonard in terms of two-way capabilities and developing playmaking skills. Like Flagg, Leonard shot below 30% from three-point range at the collegiate level. The hope is that Flagg can eventually reach Leonard's caliber of play.

Chicago Bulls Fit

Although a defensive wing would complement the Bulls' youth movement perfectly, it’s difficult to see Cooper Flagg landing in Chicago due to the organization's unwillingness to tank while the phenom forward is considered the undisputed No. 1 overall pick.

If the Bulls are fortunate enough in the NBA Draft Lottery to land Flagg, his ability to play in transition would fit seamlessly in the up-tempo offense Billy Donovan is trying to implement. An athletic wing duo of Matas Buzelis and Flagg could course-correct the Bulls toward a more competitive team featuring a defense that respects the integrity of the game.
