Rick Pitino lands key transfers as St. John's builds for the future

Rick Pitino’s offseason overhaul at St. John’s is in full swing, as the Red Storm continue reshaping their roster with key transfer additions in pursuit of another Big East title.

The Hall of Fame coach has secured two major reinforcements: former Providence standout Bryce Hopkins and ex-Arizona State wing Joson Sanon, signaling the program’s intent to compete at the highest level while building for long-term success.

Despite winning the Big East and earning a top-five ranking in the AP Top 25 ahead of the NCAA Tournament and a No. 2 seed in the tournament, St. John’s suffered a disappointing second-round exit, falling 75-66 to 10-seed Arkansas in a March Madness upset.

The loss derailed what had been an exciting season and reinforced the need for roster upgrades. The additions of Hopkins and Sanon mark key steps in Pitino’s push for deeper postseason success.

Hopkins, a 6-foot-7 forward, arrives as one of the Big East’s most dynamic players. A former All-Big East first-team selection, he averaged 15.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game during the 2022-23 season before injuries slowed his progress, allowing to play only 17 games over the past two seasons.

Now fully recovered, he chose St. John’s citing Pitino’s track record in player development as a decisive factor. His ability to score at all levels, rebound and create mismatches will be vital for a Red Storm squad looking to enhance its offensive versatility.

Sanon, a 6-foot-6 freshman wing, provides another promising building block. A former four-star recruit, he showcased his scoring potential at Arizona State, averaging 11.9 points per game while shooting 36.9 percent from three-point range.

At just 19 years old, he brings high upside and much-needed perimeter shooting to a St. John’s team that struggled with spacing last season. His athleticism and defensive versatility also align well with Pitino’s aggressive system.

While the Red Storm have strengthened their roster, they have also seen key departures. Wing RJ Luis Jr. has entered the NBA Draft while also remaining in the transfer portal. The Big East Player of the Year’s decision to leave was reportedly mutual. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Brady Dunlap has also entered the transfer portal in search of a better system fit.

Despite the roster turnover, Pitino’s latest acquisitions reaffirm his vision for a competitive and sustainable program. With Hopkins and Sanon on board, St. John’s adds immediate impact talent while positioning itself as an attractive destination for future transfers. As Pitino continues retooling the roster, the Red Storm remain a team to watch in the evolving Big East landscape.
