St. John’s Red Storm head coach and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame 2013 inductee Rick Pitino congratulated one of his former players on his latest career milestone.

Panathinaikos small forward Ioannis Papapetrou announced his retirement from Greek professional basketball at 31, following multiple injury-riddled seasons during the latter half of his 11-year career.

“With immense gratitude for this journey, today has come—the day to close this beautiful chapter of my life,” Papapetrou wrote in a recent Instagram post. “This isn’t how I imagined it ending, and I thought the final whistle would come much later.”

“But a friend once said to me: Anything that happens in life might turn out to be for good, or it might turn out to be for bad,” he continued. “From the greatest good, bad can arise—and from the worst bad, something good can emerge.”

Papapetrou played seven seasons with Panathinaikos from 2018-25 and two years from 2018-20 under Pitino, where they helped the club win the Greek League championship and the Greek Cup in 2019. Papapetrou also won the EuroLeague title with Panathinaikos in 2024 following a 13-season drought.

“I was fortunate to spend two years with Ioannis Papapetrou,” Pitino wrote on X Sunday. “He was not only a dedicated, talented team player but a wonderful person off the court.”

At 6-foot-8 and roughly 233 pounds, Papapetrou averaged 10.4 and 11.2 points per game while being coached by Pitino. Papapetrou ended his career as the 2021 Greek League MVP and a three-time Greek Cup champion.

“A total credit to basketball in Greece,” Pitino concluded. “Good luck, pap, much happiness.”
