SEC team gets first conference win of season

At long last, there are no longer any winless basketball teams in SEC play. The South Carolina Gamecocks snapped a 13-game conference losing streak Saturday night with an 84-69 victory over Texas.

Free-throw shooting played a crucial role in South Carolina's win. The Gamecocks shot just 69.8% free throws as a team this season, but they went a bit above that Saturday and shot 75.6% from the line with 34 made free throws.

Jamarii Thomas led the way for the Gamecocks with 12 made free throws. Collin Murray-Boyles led them in scoring with 22 points, his eighth game with 20+ points this season.

Zachary Davis (12 points) and Morris Ugusuk (10 points) were also in double figures for South Carolina.

Tre Johnson led all scorers with 29 points for Texas. Johnson has scored 24+ points in four of his last five games, including a 32-point performance last week against Kentucky.

No other players were in double digits for Texas, as Arthur Kaluma was the closest with nine points.

Texas will remain in the NCAA Tournament picture, while the Gamecocks (11-16, 1-13 conference) will look to continue to build momentum toward the 2025-26 season.
