SMU upsets No. 6 Houston after wild ending

SMU took down No. 6 Houston on Wednesday, and the home crowd stormed the court in a crazy postgame scene — almost as crazy as the end of the game itself.

The Mustangs knocked off the Cougars 85-83, handing them their first loss in conference play this season. SMU came back from as much as a 15-point deficit and pulled out the win after an eventful final few seconds of game action.

With 5.5 seconds on the clock, SMU led by two with Kendric Davis at the free throw line. He hit the first to put them up three, but missed the second to keep it at a one-possession game. Reggie Chaney got the rebound and passed it to Kyler Edwards, who quickly flew up the court.

SMU trapped the Houston guard at mid-court and went for the intentional foul, but Edwards sniffed it out and chucked up a shot from just inside the half court line. The referees briefly conferred, and ultimately awarded Edwards three free throws on a shooting foul rather than the on-the-floor call the Mustangs were looking for.

That sent Edwards to the line with the chance to tie the game. That opportunity quickly evaporated, though, when he bricked his first shot from the stripe off front-iron. He hit the second shot to make it 85-83, but would have to intentionally miss the third shot and hope for an offensive rebound.

Edwards did an admirable job launching the ball off the front of the rim, as Houston appeared to get the offensive board, but a lane violation was called and it became SMU ball. The Mustangs inbounded it deep and saw it tipped out of bounds, but they were able to successfully inbound it again and keep it away from the Cougars to seal the win and summon the students onto the hardwood.

Davis led all scorers with 22 points, pulling in seven rebounds and dishing out seven assists as well. Marcus Weathers was not far behind with 20, and logged seven boards and five assists of his own. Michael Weathers added 17 points.

Edwards was one of three Cougars to finish with 17 points, joined by Taze Moore and Josh Carlton. Jamal Shead scored 14 and doled out 12 dimes, and Fabian White Jr. had 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
