No. 9 St. John's holds off No. 24 Creighton despite struggling at the free-throw line

No. 9 St. John's held off No. 24 Creighton, 79-73, in a top-25 showdown at Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Storm improved to 22-4 (13-2 Big East) with the win. Creighton dropped to 18-8 (11-4 Big East) with the loss.

Despite shooting just 17-of-29 (58.6%) from the free-throw line, the Red Storm were able to come away with their third ranked win in 12 days.

Turnovers were a key part of the game, as Creighton finished with 15 compared to just five for St. Johns.

The Red Storm took advantage of those turnovers, scoring 20 points off of them, a key part of a six-point win.

Junior guard RJ Luis Jr. led the way for St. John's, finishing with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Prior to Sunday, his season high in rebounds was 13, and that came all the way back in November.

Senior guard Kadary Richmond also collected a double-double, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Zuby Ejiofor grabbed nine rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive glass.

The loss for Creighton was its second of the week, as it fell to UConn on Tuesday.

Senior guard Steven Ashworth was the leading scorer for the Bluejays, finishing with 23 points and dishing out 11 assists.

Senior guard Jamiya Neal (19 points), senior center Ryan Kalkbrenner (12 points) and sophomore forward Jasen Green (10 points) were all in double figures as well.

Creighton will likely fall out of the Top 25 after an 0-2 week and will look to rebound a week from Sunday when it hosts Georgetown.

St. John's will travel to DePaul on Wednesday before returning back home to MSG for a much-anticipated rematch against UConn on Feb. 23.
