Cooper Flagg is already being talked about as one of the most skilled top picks in recent memory.
After high school, Flagg had plenty of Division 1 offers but chose to play for Duke.
The NBA Draft’s No. 1 pick had an impressive college career, which made him a well-known name even before joining the league. His training sessions with the 2024 USA Olympic group also boosted his profile.
His game was expected to translate well to the league, given how effective he was on both ends of the floor. But after his Summer League debut against Bronny James’ LA Lakers, an NBA expert pointed out an area where Flagg needs some improvement.
Flagg finished the game against the Lakers with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Kyrie Irving praised him afterwards, but Flagg was not pleased with how he played.
He shot 31% from two-point range and missed all five of his three-point shots.
Tim Legler was in attendance and broke down what he felt went wrong for Flagg after the game.
On the All NBA podcast, he said: “I could see it from behind him as soon as it came off from his hands you could see that it was not going in because the flight was different.
“So to me, is that an easy thing to fix? You have to stop turning your wrist. To be honest with you, I don’t know.
“He’s only 18 years old, but they’ve got to see the same things that I’m seeing and it’s nit-picking the number one pick and a guy that you know might be a Hall of Famer, he might be an MVP one day.
“But that is something for me that he absolutely needs to get hold of because he’s gonna be a high 20s low 30s three-point shooter if he doesn’t.”
One game is never enough to judge a player, but Legler’s observations do highlight something Flagg might want to address.
Flagg shot 38.5% from three during the NCAA tournament, but the NBA line is a step further back, and that makes a difference.
Defenders will be more physical and space will be harder to come by, so he’ll need to take advantage of every look he gets.
If his mechanics don’t improve, he could find it hard to maintain good shooting numbers.
But he does have one of the best shooters in NBA history in Klay Thompson on his side now.

Thompson isn’t just an elite shooter; he’s also someone who can help guide Flagg through these early adjustments.
Rookies often struggle with efficiency at first, but Flagg has strong support around him. Even LeBron James noted how well-positioned he is in Dallas.
The four-time champion has one of the best shooting forms in the league and that is something Flagg can learn a lot from.
If Cooper takes on board what his teammates are telling him and adapts quickly, there is little doubt he will be among the league’s top players before long.
