Todd Golden Reveals Florida's Starting Lineup, why it's a Big Problem for SEC Teams

Most of the attention on Florida's national championship squad last year went to the guards, and for good reason. Walter Clayton Jr was a consensus first team All-American and had a Kemba Walker-like run through the NCAA Tournament to lead the Gators to their first national championship since 2007, while Alijah Martin and Will Richard were the team's second and third leading scorers.

However, it was the frontcourt quartet of Alex Condon, Thomas Haugh, Rueben Chinyelu, and Micah Handlogten that did the dirty work down on the block that helped Todd Golden's team displace rugged opponents like Texas Tech, Auburn, and eventually Houston in the national championship.

And not only are those four bigs all back in Gainesville for this upcoming season - Golden plans to start three of them together.

Speaking to Jon Rothstein on the 'Inside College Basketball Now' podcast, Golden revealed what many have suspected this offseason: that Haugh will play the three alongside Condon and Chinyelu in Florida's starting lineup this upcoming season.

"Unless we have some significant changes I expect to see [those three] in the starting lineup every night," Golden said. "I think we're gonna move Tommy down to the three and use his athleticism, his length, his physicality. He's just been shooting the ball so well that it gives us that Corey Brewer-esque type wing."

The guard trio of Clayton, Richard, and Martin are all out the door while a fourth guard, Denzel Aberdeen, transferred to SEC rival Kentucky. Florida replenished the backcourt with a pair of elite transfer portal additions in Boogie Fland (Arkansas) and Xaivian Lee (Princeton), and instead of finding a third guard to start alongside the newcomers, Golden opted to go with a rare three-big lineup.

Haugh is a 6'9, 210 pound forward who played a very valuable role for the Gators off the bench last season, appearing in 40 games and playing 24.4 minutes per game despite making just five starts. He averaged 9.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while shooting just under 60% on two point attempts and 34% from three on 2.6 attempts per game.

His presence at the three gives Florida one of the biggest starting lineups in college hoops, with Chinyelu and Condon each standing at 6'11. With the 7'1 Handlogten and 7'9 sophomore Olivier Rioux coming off the bench, opposing teams will have their hands full trying to battle for rebounds against this Gators team.

If Haugh is athletic enough to guard opposing threes in the SEC, his length and physicality will cause all sorts of problems in conference play.

Lee and Fland both have huge shoes to fill replacing Clayton, Richard, and Martin, but make no mistake this Florida team's chances of repeating as national champions rest squarely on the frontcourt and Haugh's adjustment to playing a new role entering his junior year.
