Former Baylor point guard Robert Wright III made his official visit to BYU on Friday. The former five-star recruit who has been in the transfer portal since Monday was initially linked to the Cougars. Will BYU be adding the top guard to replace Egor Demim? "Not yet, but it's very likely," one source tells Athlon.
The 6-foot-1 guard previously gave BYU coaches a 'verbal commitment' on Thursday, but hasn't signed off on it yet.
Wright is seen as BYU's top option in the portal. Like Demin, he'll likely be chasing NBA dreams after one season at his next stop. The Cougars have witnessed what the former Bear can do on the court. Wright had 22 points in Baylor’s overtime loss to BYU last year. He made the Big 12’s All-Freshman team after averaging 11.5 points and 4.2 assists per game last season.
"Wright is a true floor general who has had a knack for running his team since we first started evaluating him as an underclassman in high school," 247Sports Adam Finkelstein says. "In a Baylor season that was characterized by constant injuries, Wright was the stabilizing force, both literally and figuratively. He earned the starting point job role, in a move that sent grad transfer Jeremy Roach to the bench, and provided veteran like reliability more often than not"
Coming out of Montverde Academy in Florida, Wright was named the No. 1 player in the nation, according to 247Sports. He committed to Baylor over 15 others schools, most of them in the ACC.
Wright will have three years of eligibility at this next stop.
