The Runnin’ Rebels keep giving fans something to talk about, with big moments coming from up and down the roster. However, three standout performances over the past week rose above the rest.
The first standout came from forward Jacob Bannarbie on Feb. 7 against Grand Canyon. He owned the glass and finished with 5 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists while shooting 50 percent from the field and 100 percent at the line. Considering he averages 5.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists, it was a clear reminder of how much he can impact the game in the paint. At 6-foot-9, he has the size to control the restricted area on both ends.
The second standout came from UNLV star Dra Gibb-Lawhorn on Feb. 10 against San Jose State. He led the Rebels to an 82-75 win with 24 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists while shooting 52.6 percent from the field. He did it without attempting a single free throw, which is rare in today’s game, and he scored strictly off live action.
And it was not even his biggest outburst lately. Over the previous three games, he scored 25-plus each time. He continues to show he can be the kind of leader UNLV can build around.
Last but certainly not least, forward Kimani Hamilton recorded a double-double in UNLV’s Feb. 10 win over San Jose State. He finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists, shooting 75 percent from 3, 88.9 percent at the line and 66.7 percent overall. It marked his first double-double of the season and his second 20-point game. His first came Dec. 20 against Fresno State, when he scored 20 points with 2 rebounds and 1 assist while shooting 70 percent from the field.
Those three performances show just how high UNLV’s ceiling can be. Next up, the Rebels play Boise State on Feb. 13. The Broncos enter 15-8, while UNLV sits at 12-12. A win would push the Rebels above .500 and give them victory No. 13.
