West Virginia Comes Up Short Against No. 24 Virginia
USA TODAY Sports

Ft. Myers, FL - The West Virginia Mountaineers (2-3) trailed by 10 in the second half and stormed back to take the lead before falling short in the final seconds 56-54. West Virgnia center Jesse Edwards and forward Quinn Slazinski led all scorers with 17 points apiece.

The two teams shot a combined 0-9 from the field to start the game before Virginia forward Jordan Minor scored the game's first bucket three and a half minutes into the action, then West Virginia center Jesse Edwards tied the game at two out of the first media timeout with an easy two-handed jam on in inbound pass under the basket.

West Virginia grabbed a three-point advantage, 7-4, following a three from forward Quinn Slazinksi, at the 13:54 mark of the first half but within the 10 lead changes in the first half, Virginia held the largest margin 14-10 near the midway point of the first half.

Virginia held a 26-23 at halftime behind 10 first half Mountaineer turnovers.

Edwards and Slazinksi led the Mountaineers in scoring in the first half, producing 21 of the Mountaineers 23 first half points with forward Pat Suemnick getting the remaining field goal.

Jesse Edwards started the scoring in the second half, but West Virginia missed its next six field goals while Virginia extended its leads to 10 at the 13:18 mark of the second half.

After West Virginia guards Kobe Johnson and Seth Wilson went scoreless in the first half, the duo began to heat up. Edwards created some momentum with an alley-oop, and Johnson buried a three on the ensuing possession, then Wilson hit back-to-back threes and Johnson followed with another triple as part of a 16-4 run and a 42-40 with 8:41 remaining in the game.

Virginia guard Reece Beekman hit a jumper on the next possession and guard Jacob Groves hit a three to provide a 5-0 spurt, but Slazinski answered with a three to tie the game at 45.

The Cavaliers held a three-point lead with just under three minutes remaining in the game before Edwards split a pair of free throws and Wilson hit a three in transition to give the Mountaineers a 51-50 lead with 1:55 to play.

Virginia, again, grabbed a three-point but Slazinski answered from the free throw line after he was fouled from behind the arc to tie the game at 54.

Cavalier guard Leon Bond III grabbed an offensive rebound with six second remaining, then Beekman drove the lane, received the foul, and split the free throws, but Virginia grabbed another offensive rebound to close the game from the free throw line for a 56-54 win.
