West Virginia’s frontcourt got a boost as freshman center Abraham Oyeadier has withdrawn from the transfer portal and rejoined the Mountaineers, providing much-needed depth for head coach Ross Hodge’s inaugural season.
Oyeadier, a 6-foot-9, 221-pound native of Accra, Ghana, redshirted last season and retains all four years of eligibility. He played his prep basketball at the Academy of Sports Science in Corona, California, where he averaged 10.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. Despite interest from programs like Pepperdine and UC Irvine, he initially chose West Virginia for its opportunities.
His return is timely for a program that has experienced significant roster turnover. Following the departure of head coach Darian DeVries to Indiana, the Mountaineers saw several players enter the transfer portal, including forward Ofri Naveh, who has since committed to Oral Roberts. Oyeadier’s decision to stay provides stability and a foundation for Hodge as he rebuilds the roster.
Currently, West Virginia’s roster includes Oyeadier and UNC Wilmington transfer Harlan Obioha as the only true centers. Obioha is expected to take on a significant role, but the coaching staff is actively seeking additional experienced big men to bolster the lineup.
In the broader context of the Big 12, where physical play and interior presence are crucial, Oyeadier’s return could be a strategic advantage. His development will be key to West Virginia’s competitiveness in the conference.
As the Mountaineers continue to navigate the challenges of roster construction in the current college basketball landscape, retaining and developing talent like Oyeadier will be essential for sustained success.
