PHOENIX — Arizona State freshman guard Joson Sanon has reportedly entered the transfer portal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello. The news comes as the portal officially opened Monday, allowing players to explore new opportunities.
Sanon, a former five-star recruit from Saxtons River, Vermont, was one of the most highly regarded prospects to join ASU in recent years. He played in 29 games this season, starting in nine, and averaged 11.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game. Before suffering an ankle injury in Arizona State’s Big 12 opener against BYU, he was shooting 50% from three-point range, leading head coach Bobby Hurley to call him “the best shooter he has ever coached.” After returning, his efficiency dipped, but he closed the season strong, averaging 18.8 points per game in the final five contests.
Sanon’s decision is a tough blow for a program already facing an uncertain future. The Sun Devils struggled to a 13-19 record in their first Big 12 season and must now replace one of their most talented offensive weapons. Sanon’s ability to space the floor and create his own shot was expected to be a major piece of ASU’s rebuild. Without him, the team will likely need to lean on the transfer portal to replenish its scoring depth.
Arizona State is set to compete in the College Basketball Crown in Las Vegas, facing Nebraska on March 31, but it remains unclear if Sanon will participate.
Given his talent and scoring ability, Sanon will be one of the most sought-after names in the transfer portal. Programs in need of a scoring guard with high efficiency from deep will certainly be interested.
Big 12 Contenders: Schools like Kansas and Baylor could see him as a dynamic scoring piece in an already competitive conference.
High-Major Programs Needing a Shooter: Teams like Kentucky, UConn, or Arkansas might target Sanon to bolster their perimeter scoring.
Return to the East Coast: A move closer to home could make schools like Providence or Villanova appealing destinations.
Sanon’s next step will be one of the more intriguing offseason storylines, as he has the potential to make an instant impact wherever he lands.
