The Wisconsin Badgers basketball team has finally begun to practice as a near full team ahead of a pivotal season for the program.
Wisconsin previously entered the transfer portal with plenty of uncertainty surrounding the program after navigating the new college basketball landscape successfully a season ago. With more additions needed in a single year than ever before, the Badgers will have nearly an entirely different look this upcoming season as core pieces of the team such as John Tonje, Steven Crowl, Max Klesmit, Kamari McGee, and Carter Gilmore have all moved on.
Among the new additions to the Badgers via the transfer portal this off-season is a Milwaukee native named Andrew Rohde who has impressed the staff very early on. Rohde is an accomplished play-maker, inside scorer, and three-point shooter who plays a style of up-tempo basketball that vibes well with Madison. The exact roles and kinks are still being worked out within the team, but the guard could blossom into the go-to three-point option for the team during the upcoming season.
Nick Boyd, John Blackwell, and Austin Rapp will all take a great deal of three-point shots this upcoming season, but the bulk of the work will likely be set aside for Rohde. The fourth-year guard is a dynamic scorer from outside and with comfortably being able to shoot long-range shots in a variety of ways, Rohde should be the go-to outside scoring option for the Wisconsin Badgers.
From beyond the arc, Rohde shot 41.3% from outside with 104 three-point attempts last season for the Virginia Cavaliers. The guard has developed plenty over the past three seasons in ways that some statistics do not exactly showcase. One such manner has been the shooting intelligence growth of Rohde, who once was a player caught in the trap of launching shots whenever space was provided.
Now, the guard is much more focused on shot selection and the accuracy of Rohde has gone through the roof. Combining the advancements in shot selection for Rohde along with the new team surrounding him, and the Wisconsin Badgers might have a future gem on their hands.
Previously, Rohde had always been one of the premier shooting options on the court for his past teams which skewed the statistics the recruit recorded. Along with this, the guard did not have any real help to limit the amount of pressure placed on each shot.
With the Wisconsin Badgers this season, however, Rohde will have other scoring options such as Rapp, Boyd, Blackwell, and Winter who all serve different roles. The likelihood of Rohde taking “his shot” each time he decides to pull the trigger with other capable scoring options around is much higher since the guard can kick out the basketball if the look does not feel right. Previously, Rohde did not have the same option which caused ugly desperation shots to be taken.
