Before he was stuffing the stat book for Michigan this season, Yaxel Lendeborg was a name quickly but quietly sneaking up draft boards. Despite hearing his name last year in draft talk, Lendeborg smartly stayed in the college ranks. Making the move to Ann Arbor has more than paid off, not only for himself, but also for his head coach, Dusty May. It was a big chance for both coach and player, and Lendeborg has more than delivered. Now he has more than proven to be a 2026 NBA Draft lottery pick come June.

College Career

It’s no secret that Lendeborg had an adventurous collegiate career. After playing three seasons at the Junior College Level at Arizona Western. He was twice named player of the year in his conference, along with an All-American honor.  Lendeborg took his talents to Division 1 with the UAB Blazers. He showcased a natural rebounding ability throughout his time playing collegiately. That was one of the biggest reasons Lendeborg’s name started floating around the NBA Draft last season. Not only could he rebound, but he could score, not to mention defending nearly any position,

In his two seasons at UAB, Lendeborg was a first-team All-AAC player and a two-time Defensive Player of the Year. Lendeborg joined the Wolverines to showcase his skills.  Michigan went a record 29-2 through the regular season. Lenderborg’s 14.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists helped lead the Wolverines to go 19-1 in the Big Ten and win the league by four games. Not to mention, he delivered two of the biggest games of the season, scoring over 25 points in both victories over rival Michigan State. For that success, Lendeborg was named Big Ten Player of the Year while also earning All-Defensive honors once again.

Strengths

Offense

Lendeborg has been known at the defensive end and for his rebounding. But he’s shown his prowess at scoring at all three levels. Lendeborg can get to the rim; he can get to the free-throw line. Not to mention, he has shown a massive improvement as a spot-up shooter this season.

Questions still surrounded his outside shot, but when he’s been on from deep, he can score in bunches. When not the go-to scorer, he can help set up others. He has solid ball control and has strong passing vision to make plays to not only set himself up, but also his teammates. Lendeborg is always moving, which makes him an excellent off-ball spacer and cutter. And he’s not afraid to attack weaker defenders.

Lendeborg is a career 51.6 percent shooter from the field. Not to mention he’s really developed a smooth stroke from the free throw line, shooting 83 percent from the line this season. It’s clear Lendeborg can stuff the stat book in all categories.

Defense

Lendeborg is by far one of the best defenders in the country, able to guard all five positions. If a shot goes up, Lendeborg is contesting it. He is also a big time rebounder and an active defender with quick hands and great instincts. He’s always putting his hands in passing lanes, and very good at creating turnovers on the help side.

Lendeborg is very effective guarding in the paint. He has good size at 6-foot-9 and 230 pounds, which makes it hard to get off balance when guarding other bigs. Not to mention Lendeborg isn’t afraid to get after the ball at the rim. He has a never-say-die attitude and always seems to be in the right spot.

Weaknesses

Offense

Lendeborg has the talent at all three levels to score the ball, but his three-point shooting is still not up to snuff. It’s not a lack of effort, but sometimes, Lendeborg can settle for deep shots. He has a career three-point mark of 34 percent and will need to continue to improve from deep.

Lendeborg also lacks a quick first step that can get him open without a screener. Not to mention, he can sometimes dribble into traffic, which leads to bad passes. He also struggles to create against contact on the perimeter, which is a massive part of the next level.

Defense

Lendeborg struggles against quicker forwards and against offenses that require frequent switches. That’s where his speed may become an issue. His shot-blocking can be limited due to his lack of vertical explosion. That’s not to say he can’t jump, but he’s certainly not a primary rim protector. Lendeborg will need to be in a structure-system-based role in the league. Lastly, he sometimes overfocuses on trying to force a turnover, which leads to an easy bucket.

NBA Comparison

Lendeborg has great size, and his effort to crash the glass mirrors several players in the NBA. But the best NBA comp for Lendeborg is Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray. Murray was a strong rebounder and defensive player, but he has also shown his knack for being a big-time scorer. If Lendeborg can continue to develop his deep shot, it’s a very fair comparison.

Another great comparison is Denver Nuggets forward Cameron Johnson. Like Lendeborg, Johnson showcased his skill and ability at more than one stop, and his skill translated everywhere he went. Lendeborg’s skills and age will make him an important piece alongside an established team.
