What a time to be a fan of LSU women’s athletics. Amazingly, you can easily go down the line and find successful program after successful program. Whether it be the top-10 LSU women’s basketball team, the No. 2 overall LSU gymnastics squad or undefeated LSU softball , everyone is dominating in 2024. Even better, all the teams are well aware of each other’s success, as basketball coach Kim Mulkey recently had some high praise for Tiger softball coach Beth Torina.

Coach Kim Mulkey “so happy” for coach Beth Torina and the LSU softball team

“How about those softball Lady Tigers?”

Squads like this 2024 LSU softball team don’t come around very often. In fact, at 23-0, the Lady Tigers are officially having the second best start to a season in program history, with the 2015 group having gone 25-0 to start their year.

It’s an impressive feat for the veteran team, and one that feels a little extra special after a heartbreaking end to the 2023 campaign. Despite having looked strong all season long, coach Beth Torina and her squad came up much shorter than many had anticipated, dropping two in a row against Louisiana Lafayette in the Regional round of the NCAA tournament.

While there was likely plenty of conversation that went on following the loss, it very well could have been something that is fueling this year’s team. Notably, despite the overlapping nature of their seasons, the softball team certainly isn’t going unnoticed by LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey.

“And you know what’s so impressive, and I’m so happy for Beth,” the Tiger women’s basketball coach began during her weekly radio show earlier this week. “They lost a heartbreaker to ULL in the playoffs, and she felt so low, and so down, and I talked to her at great length and said, ‘This is sports. Pick yourself back up.’ And look what they’re doing today.”

Interestingly enough, sitting with 23 wins in a row to start the year, the Tigers have a chance to make history in Baton Rouge this weekend. LSU softball will host Ole Miss for a Saturday, Sunday, Monday series, and while it won’t be easy by any means, if they manage to win all three matchups, they will have achieved a program record 26 wins in a row.

As we sit today, Ole Miss is unranked and has a current record of 18-7. With that said, they’re coming off a three game win streak, including a victory over in-state rival No. 17 Mississippi State.

Coach Beth Torina and the Tigers are doing something special in 2024. If they hope to make history in the process, they’ll need to get through a feisty Rebels squad starting on March 16, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. CST at Tiger Park.
