How Caitlin Clark Helped Iowa Hawkeyes Land Emely Rodriguez

On Monday it was announced that the Iowa women's basketball program picked up an extremely interesting player via the transfer portal in Emely Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, 20, spent her freshman season as a small forward for the Central Florida Knights, where she averaged 11.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 26.4 minutes per contest.

Rodriguez is a very nice pickup for Jan Jensen heading into her second season as head coach and she deserves credit for that portal win. She might be able to throw a hat tip to Caitlin Clark, though, because the former Iowa superstar may have swayed Rodriguez to Iowa City.

Clark didn't say anything personally to Rodriguez as far as we know, but her otherworldly presence as a Hawkeye caught Rodriguez's eye when she travelled from the Dominican Republic to Kissimmee, Florida to chase her basketball dreams back in 2021.

According to a report from Chad Leistikow of the Des Moines Register, Rodriguez didn't watch any college basketball growing up in the Dominican Republic. Clark was a sophomore at Iowa when Rodriguez came to the states, though, and she watched the former Hawkeye capture the attention of not just the college basketball scene — but the sports world in general — in 2023 and 2024.

“I started hearing about Iowa because of Caitlin Clark,” Rodriguez said, per Leistikow.

Rodriguez's recruitment as a transfer portal player came down to Iowa and Indiana. She ultimately felt the Hawkeyes gave her the best opportunity for growth, but who knows if she would have even considered Iowa had it not been for the popularity of Clark?

I think it was time to go to a better place for me to grow and develop as a person and player,” Rodriguez said of her decision to transfer from UCF. “I think Iowa is the right place for me.”

Chalk it up as another win for the Hawkeyes, and, in a way, another win for Clark.

Shedeur Sanders gets new chance after Browns QB injury

Shedeur Sanders has been working with the Cleveland Browns' equipment staff as the No. 4 quarterback this summer. He'll have a new opportunity following the troubling injury news for Kenny Pickett. Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Pickett suffered a hamstring injury during Saturday's practice and will not receive reps until his issue is re-evaluated. "Browns QB Kenny Pickett injured his hamstring near the end of Saturday’s practice and is expected to re-evaluate the injury later this week, per sources," Schefter posted on X. "Pickett was coming off a strong couple of practices, per sources, and at least for the short term, there now will be more reps for Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Pickett's injury will shake up the quarterback race in Cleveland. Through OTAs and early in training camp, Sanders has been the odd man out as the only signal caller on the roster not to receive reps with the first-team offense. It's unclear if the Browns coaching staff intends to give Sanders reps with the first-team offense now that Pickett is sidelined, but the fifth-round pick will have more chances this week to prove that he deserves an opportunity to stay in Cleveland. The Browns are in a unique situation with their rookie quarterbacks. Third-round pick Dillon Gabriel was selected before Sanders, but the son of Deion Sanders fell to Day 3 of the draft for reasons other than talent. The majority of draft analysts had Sanders as a better-graded quarterback than Gabriel, and many thought the Colorado product would be taken in the first round. The Browns can use the injury as an excuse to give Sanders reps with the first team, and it's a task they need to take advantage of before the team names a starter. Sanders has the potential to be a starter in the league, and this week is pivotal for his rookie season in Cleveland.

Five Players Off to a Great Start at Green Bay Packers Training Camp 2025

We are still in the first week of Green Bay Packers training camp for the 2025 season. While it’s still early and fully padded practices are just beginning, here’s a look at five players who are off to a great start at Packers training camp 2025. We discuss the players; the reason they’re on this list and what their potential strong play could mean for them going forward. Five Players off to a Great Start at Packers Training Camp 2025, Number Five: K Brandon McManus Kicker Brandon McManus enjoyed a nearly perfect debut season in Green Bay in 2024, making all his extra points and missing just one field goal during the regular season. In training camp, the veteran kicker has been automatic. He made his first 15 field goal tries including three-of-three from 50 yards out or more. His long was a 56-yard effort. The Packers need another strong season from McManus after struggling through a season and a half of inconsistent kicking after parting ways with Mason Crosby. So far, he’s off to a great start. Number Four: WR Dontayvion Wicks Dontayvion Wicks led the team in targets last season with 76 but was only fourth on the team with 39 catches. Drops were a problem all season. He had nine drops or a drop percentage of 11.8. The Packers need Wicks to cut down on the drops and take advantage of his speed and ability to get open when running pass patterns. So far, Wicks has stood out in training camp and made some big plays. He is also holding on to almost every catchable ball sent his way. Wicks may have more upside than any healthy veteran receiver on the Packers roster. He needs to continue to be consistent to solidify his spot in the lineup in what is now a crowded receiver room. Five Players off to a Great Start at Packers Training Camp 2025, Number Three: CB Carrington Valentine Carrington Valentine has a fight on his hands for playing time as camp started. He will battle with Keisean Nixon and newcomer Nate Hobbs for a spot at boundary corner. At the start of camp, Hobbs and Nixon were ahead of Valentine on the depth chart. But Valentine has looked good thus far in camp. He had two interceptions during the first few days of practice and has done a good job in coverage. As usual, he’s played physically in coverage, and he’s done a good job of breaking up passes. His goal is to carve out a bigger role for himself in the defense as he enters this third season in the NFL. He’s come a long way from being a seventh-round draft pick and now hopes to establish himself as a full-time starter. Number Two: DT Kenny Clark Kenny Clark is coming off the worst season of his NFL career statistically in 2024. The three-time Pro Bowler went from a career-high 7.5 sacks in 2023 to just one in 2024. He lacked the explosiveness coming off the snap of the ball that made him a disruptive force in the middle of the defensive line throughout his career. At OTAs, Clark revealed that he played last season with a broken big toe which hampered his effectiveness. Thus far in camp, Clark seems to be regaining his explosiveness and so far, he feels good. “All that stuff is behind me,” Clark told reporters. “You don’t really know what to expect coming back, especially with the foot. Today I felt a lot more comfortable. I’m allowed to play free and be me.” A healthy Clark would be a big improvement for the Packers defensive line in 2025, both when defending the run and rushing the quarterback. Five Players off to a Great Start at Packers Training Camp 2025, Number One: WR Matthew Golden During the first few days of training camp, first round pick Matthew Golden flashed the talent he has that made him the Packers first wide receiver taken in the first round since 2002. Golden has been catching nearly everything thrown his way. The Packers receiving corps struggled with drops all season. One reason the Packers drafted him was because he has reliable hands. The Packers have also utilized Golden on jet sweeps and end arounds, much like they did the last two seasons with Jayden Reed. Head coach Matt LaFleur appears to be at least auditioning Golden for that role to see how he handles it. It would be one way to ensure he gets a certain number of touches early on while he’s still learning the offense. Golden still has work to do, but he’s made a good first impression at training camp.

Brewers Predicted To Bring Top Slugger To Milwaukee In Huge Deadline Heist

Major League Baseball's hottest team cooled down a bit over the weekend. The Milwaukee Brewers just lost their first series since Jul. 3, dropping two of three to the sneaky Miami Marlins. With the trade deadline looming, they'll now shift their focus to a series with the Chicago Cubs that will decide who leaves with sole possession of first place in the National League Central. This Cubs team is ferocious, and it's going to be a tough battle the rest of the way. The Brewers could certainly use one more big bat to tilt the scales in their favor - a bat very much like Eugenio Suárez of the Arizona Diamondbacks, perhaps. One baseball writer believes that a major third base upgrade is on its way to Milwaukee. On Sunday, Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut predicted that Suárez would be traded to the Brewers by Thursday's deadline, giving Milwaukee a .904 OPS and 36 home runs to add to its lineup, which lacks power. "The New York Yankees took themselves out of the mix for Eugenio Suarez with the Ryan McMahon trade and the Seattle Mariners already made a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks for first baseman Josh Naylor. There are still a few viable suitors for Suarez, but those clubs also need to balance their needs for starting pitching," wrote Johnson. "Enter the Milwaukee Brewers. Suarez is perfect for a team that has the fifth-lowest OPS (.609) at third base this season. He’ll round out the Brewers’ lineup nicely, pairing with a deep pitching staff to help Milwaukee earn a playoff spot." Just because the Yankees and Mariners are somewhat less likely than they were a few days ago to nab Suárez doesn't mean the coast is clear. The Cubs themselves could be in on the two-time All-Star, as could the Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, and Houston Astros. Milwaukee has to be decisive in the next four days. If they think Suárez is the bat to put them over the top, they have to give up at least one high-caliber prospect, which is always tough to do for a player headed to free agency at the end of the year.

Four well-paid players who will dominate fantasy football in 2025

Several NFL players signed lucrative contract extensions in the offseason, but not all of them will carry their good fortune to fantasy football. Here are four who will. WR Ja’Marr Chase | Four years, $161M Cincinnati’s 25-year-old receiver finished 2024 with career-highs in yards (1,708) and touchdowns (17) and set the bar financially by becoming the highest-paid non-quarterback in league history this offseason. He’s since been eclipsed by Steelers T.J. Watt, who recently signed a three-year, $123M contract extension. Watt gets the win, but as a linebacker, he’s essentially a non-factor in fantasy football. Chase was anything but with 403.0 fantasy points last season, more than any wide receiver and second-most of any player, regardless of position. Expect him to be taken first overall in the majority of drafts. RB Derrick Henry | Two years, $30M Henry was scheduled to make $8M in 2025 before signing his new contract, but remains a bargain even at $15M per season. Last year, the 31-year-old running back averaged a career-high 5.9 yards per carry for 1,921 yards and tied Buffalo’s James Cook and Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs for the league lead with 16 rushing scores. His yardage total was the second-most of his career and second only to Philadelphia’s Saquon Barkley, who finished second to Gibbs (362.9) in fantasy points (355.3) by running for a near-record 2,005 yards in 2024. Henry’s limited usage in the passing game will always impact his fantasy numbers, but his 336.4 points were the fourth-most among running backs last season. With almost no competition for carries beyond quarterback Lamar Jackson, fantasy managers should look to stack the pair in 2025. WR Tee Higgins | Four years, $115M No wonder the Bengals haven’t paid Trey Hendrickson. While the All-Pro defensive end looks for a contract extension of his own, Cincinnati will look for its other high-paid receiver to challenge Chase for the team lead in yardage, something he did in 2020 before Chase arrived. Higgins missed five games with quad and hamstring injuries in 2024, but still managed 911 yards and a career-high ten touchdowns, good for 222.1 fantasy points as part of the NFL’s sixth-highest scoring offense. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow may not lead the league with 4,918 yards like he did last season, but as long as he’s on the field, Higgins should be no worse than a top-15 receiver this year. QB Brock Purdy | Five years, $265M Purdy’s contract makes him the highest-paid 49er in franchise history, a distinction he’ll try to live up to in 2025. Surrounded by one of the NFL’s most talented rosters since joining the team as the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, many still see the 25-year-old as a system quarterback. This year, he’ll get a chance to prove otherwise with wide receiver Deebo Samuel now in Washington and Brandon Aiyuk on the PUP list. Many expected wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who would also like a new contract, to hold out of training camp, but that hasn’t been the case so far as Jennings has been a full participant. Fortunately for Purdy, San Francisco will play the league’s easiest schedule in 2025, facing opponents that hold a .415 win percentage from 2024. Add a healthy Christian McCaffrey to the backfield, and the Niners offense should be much better in 2025 with Purdy likely to challenge the numbers that ranked him sixth in fantasy points (306.6) in 2023.
