Points milestone helps Iowa's Caitlin Clark accomplish a Division I first

Iowa star Caitlin Clark is making a case for being one of the best college basketball players, male or female, ever.

In No. 4 Iowa's matchup against rival Iowa State on Wednesday, Clark became only the 15th player in NCAA history to surpass 3,000 career points. Meanwhile, the milestone helped Clarke accomplish an impressive first.

According to ESPN, Clark is the only Division I player, male or female, to record 3,000 points, 750 rebounds and 750 assists. Fittingly, Clark crossed the 3,000-point threshold on a three-pointer.

Clark carried the Hawkeye effort in a tight 67-58 win over the Cyclones, finishing with 35 points, shooting 12-of-31 from the floor and 6-of-16 from beyond the arc while adding nine rebounds and five assists.

Believe it or not, Clark's astonishing numbers have come through only 110 career games, and she still has one more season of college eligibility left. If Clark returns for a fourth season with the Hawkeyes, she'll have a shot at making even more history.

With 3,013 points, Clark is on pace to surpass the all-time women's NCAA leader, former Washington standout and Las Vegas Aces' star Kelsey Plum (3,527).

Clark's electric play and enthusiasm have garnered her lots of attention, the kind of attention that might be too much to handle for a college student.

However, for Clark, it's having the opposite effect. Recently, she revealed wisdom beyond her years, explaining the importance of "Living in the now" to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press.

"These are going to be some of the best moments of my life that I get to share with my best friends, as a kid who's 21 years old in college," Clark said. "I play this game because I love it. I play because it's fun. And when I play that way, that's what allows me to be as good as I am."
