Sharnecce Currie-Jelks remains sidelined for Indiana women’s basketball program due to personal matters

Sharnecce Currie-Jelks transferred to the Indiana women’s basketball program this offseason and was expected to be a nice piece to the front court behind All-American Mackenzie Holmes. But, unfortunately up to this point the 6-foot-2 forward has yet to see the floor and that will likely remain moving forward.

On Friday morning, Indiana women’s basketball head coach Teri Moren said Currie-Jelks was dealing with ‘personal stuff’ and would remain sidelined for the time being.

“She’s dealing with some personal stuff and don’t want to disclose anymore information than that,” Moren said. “We have not discussed any sort of redshirt situation for her as of right now.”

There is no timeline for a return to action.

At UT-Martin, Currie-Jelks averaged 15.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game as a freshman.

She was named the 2023 OVC Freshman of the Year. She was also named to the All-OVC First Team.

Currie-Jelks ranked in the top five in the OVC in scoring (third), field goal percentage (third), blocked shots (third), offensive rebounds (third), rebounding (fifth) and defensive rebounds (t-fifth) last season.

Earlier this season, Currie-Jelks was dealing with a hamstring injury that kept her out for most of the preseason. But, when she was on the floor, Moren could see the bright spots with her addition to the Indiana women’s basketball program.

“She is an explosive athlete that runs the floor hard. A great rebounder around the rim, has a good nose for the ball,” Moren said at Big Ten Media Day. “She was their leading scorer at UT Martin. So she has experience.”

“She shows glimpses in practice of someone we can really utilize, especially with her athleticism and her ability to be committed to running the floor.”

Currie-Jelks played in the first three games of the season but has not seen action since.

Indiana remains a bit short with its depth without Currie-Jelks, who was expected to be in the rotation this year.

Also, it was announced on Friday that starting wing Sydney Parrish would be out indefinitely with a foot injury.

Indiana women’s basketball takes on Northwestern on Sunday afternoon.
