South Carolina women remain perfect, reach another Elite Eight

Dawn Staley's South Carolina Gamecocks are not slowing down.

They remained perfect for the 2022-23 season on Saturday by rolling to a 59-43 win over UCLA on Saturday, advancing to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Women's Tournament for the third year in a row.

That win not only improved South Carolina to 35-0 on the season, it extended its winning streak dating back to last season to 40 consecutive games, starting with the 2022 tournament.

Brea Beal, Kamilla Cardoso and Bree Hall all reached double-digits in Saturday's win for South Carolina.

South Carolina's last loss was 64-62 SEC Championship game loss in 2022 to Kentucky. Its only other loss since the start of the 2022 season was a 70-69 overtime loss to Missouri back on December 30, 2021.

The Gamecocks are looking to win their second consecutive national title and what would be the third under Staley's watch since taking over the program at the start of the 2008-09 season.

In the years since then South Carolina has become one of the elite programs in the women's game — along with UConn — and is now one of the giants of the game.

South Carolina had missed the women's tournament in five consecutive seasons before Staley's hire, and then fell short in her first three years as she started to build the program up.

But in the 12 years since then they have not only become a mainstay in the tournament, but a consistent No. 1 team and national championship contender.

South Carolina will look to advance to another Final Four on Monday when it plays No. 2 seed Maryland in the Greenville Regional Final. Tip-off for that game is 7 p.m. ET at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.
