Texas women's coach Vic Schaefer spends first day of fall semester welcoming new Longhorns

Monday is the first day of fall classes at Texas, and as per his custom, women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer went around making sure his new players had a great start.

Players don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Schaefer has always relished the first day of the fall semester, shuffling all over campus to meet his players where they are for selfies.

Just like with every other sport in Austin, the Texas women’s team has championship hopes going into the SEC. Last season, Schaefer’s club went 33-5 overall but finished second in the Big 12 behind a strong Oklahoma team, also now moving to the SEC.

Schaefer spent the summer wakeboarding and zip lining all while promoting Texas basketball and asking fans to “get your season tickets now!”

“Got to brag on my team, summer GPA 3.52. Special! Proud & excited about this group of young ladies,” Schaefer posted on X.

Schaefer will get tested right out of the gate in the SEC. The Longhorns open on the road against the Sooners on Jan. 2. Then, UT is back home against Arkansas and Alabama before heading out to South Carolina to face Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks — a mega-matchup for sure.

Texas will play at Texas A&M on Feb. 2, giving Schaefer a chance to go back to College Station. He was the Aggies’ de facto defensive coordinator for women’s coach Gary Blair when A&M won a national championship in 2011.

The one game everyone has circled is Feb. 16 when LSU and coach Kim Mulkey come to Moody Center. Mulkey’s Baylor Bears usually had god success against Texas in Austin over the years before Schaefer arrived.

But for now, it’s the first day of school, and Texas is ready for its first year in the SEC.
