With action in the transfer portal slowing down, it is time to take a closer look at how each P4 school did during this cycle. Up now are the Virgnia Tech Hokies

The skinny: Head coach Brent Pry’s second season didn’t start off with too much optimism, but finished at 7-6, a bowl victory and plenty of momentum heading into 2024. With many of their key players returning this season, that momentum has only intensified in recent months. While the Hokies only lost a couple of important pieces via transfer, they used the portal to solidify their interior defensive line, offensive line and linebacking group.

Total # entries into portal: 23

Total # of scholarship players who entered portal: 13

Number of scholarship players who withdrew: 0

Key losses: TE Dae’Quan Wright (Ole Miss), DB Derrick Canteen (Cincinnati)

Key additions: DT Aeneas Peebles (Duke), DT Kelvin Gilliam (Oklahoma), LB Sam Brumfield (Middle Tennessee State), OL Montavious Cunningham (Georgia State)

Final thoughts: This could be a big season for Virginia Tech and everyone in Blacksburg knows it. To better prepare themselves for 2024, Coach Pry knew that he needed to reinforce a few positions through the portal. Most importantly was the interior defensive line, which found two starters with Aeneas Peebles and Kelvin Gilliam. Both players will face a lot of pressure to succeed but are also capable of doing so. The returning linebacking group is talented, but the addition of Sam Brumfield only makes it better. While a bit undersized, he proved himself at the JUCO level and then Middle Tennessee State as a reliable and productive tackler and playmaker. Finally, on the offensive line, the Hokies bring back four of five starters, with Montavious Cunningham being a welcome addition who will start at one of the two guard positions. While the influx of transfers wasn’t abundant, the players the Hokies brought in all have an opportunity to be an important part of the 2024 season.
