Ashton Jeanty Background

Ashton Jeanty is among the most decorated players in college football history. A highly productive high school athlete at Lone Star High School in Frisco, Texas, Jeanty rushed for 1,843 yards and scored 41 total touchdowns during his senior season. Despite his remarkable statistics, he was viewed as a mid-tier recruit and chose to commit to Boise State over offers from multiple Group of Five and lower-tier Power Five programs.

At Boise State, Jeanty quickly made his mark, earning substantial playing time as a freshman and solidifying his position as the team’s featured back by his sophomore year. By his junior season in 2024, Jeanty led the FBS in rushing yards and touchdowns, cementing himself as one of college football's most prolific offensive players. His outstanding season earned him the Maxwell Award, presented annually to the best player in college football, and the Doak Walker Award, which honors the nation’s top running back. He was also a unanimous All-American and finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.

Jeanty’s junior campaign was marked by eye-popping statistics, leading the nation in total rushing yards and touchdowns. He also achieved record-breaking efficiency metrics, nearly amassing 2,000 yards after contact and 5.25 yards after contact per carry. His ability to force missed tackles at an elite level allowed him to lead the country in total missed tackles forced, further highlighting his dominance.

During Jeanty's three years in college, he never received a PFF run grade below 90, culminating in an impressive 96.6 in 2024—the highest mark ever recorded.

Ashton Jeanty Strengths

  • Elite contact balance: Rarely goes down on first contact, even against larger defenders.
  • Low center of gravity: Displays the ability to remain upright while absorbing hits and sustaining forward momentum.
  • Exceptional vision: Anticipates gaps before they fully open, turning small creases into significant plays.
  • Top-end speed: A home run threat capable of outrunning defenders in the open field.
  • Arsenal of moves: Features a stiff arm, spin, and the ability to lower his pads to gain the tough yards.
  • Elite production: Accumulated 1,970 yards after contact, 748 more than the next closest player.

Ashton Jeanty Weaknesses

  • Pass protection: He struggles to identify blitzes and execute assignments, which limits his third-down reliability.
  • Aggressive running style: He occasionally outruns his blockers, missing out on opportunities for fully developed plays.
  • Workload concerns: More than 800 touches during his college could raise concerns about durability.
  • Receiving usage: Limited as a pass catcher, though this seems more linked to Boise State’s system than his ability.

Final Thoughts on Ashton Jeanty and Chicago Bears Fit

Ashton Jeanty is among the most dynamic and productive running backs in the 2025 draft class. His contact balance, vision, and home-run ability make him an immediate difference-maker at the NFL level. His record-breaking junior season is a testament to his consistency and ability to gain yards in any situation. While concerns regarding his pass protection and workload are valid, his potential as a runner far outweighs these issues.

The fit between Ashton Jeanty and the Chicago Bears is undeniable. In 2025, running back is a glaring need for the Bears after disappointing production from D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson. Adding Jeanty instantly elevates the offense. From an on-field perspective alone, his presence would improve the Bears from Day 1, irrespective of draft value. Whichever team selects Jeanty will likely acquire a top 5-10 NFL running back the moment he steps onto the field.

Jeanty’s impact would be transformative for the Bears. He would immediately relieve pressure on Caleb Williams and the offensive line by keeping the offense ahead of the chains and reducing the number of third-and-long situations. Jeanty is the kind of player who can serve as a true offensive multiplier, creating opportunities for himself and the passing game. His ability to compel defenses to account for him on every play would open up the middle of the field on play-action passes, as linebackers would have to respect his explosive, game-breaking potential every time he touches the ball.

From a pure football perspective, Jeanty’s fit in Chicago’s offense is ideal. Ben Johnson loves to run the ball, and Jeanty's combination of vision, balance, and big-play ability meets a critical need for the Bears while introducing new dimensions to their offense.

The question ultimately hinges on draft value: can the Bears afford to spend a first-round pick on a skill position player instead of addressing needs in the trenches? In my opinion, the answer is yes. Jeanty is a blue-chip talent, and the Bears have been deprived of elite playmakers for far too long.

For this to make sense, the Bears must commit to addressing their offensive line needs decisively in free agency and during the 2025 draft. If they do, selecting Jeanty in the first round becomes a logical and impactful choice to elevate the offense.
