After reaching the College Football Playoff semifinals last season, Penn State‘s expectations are sky high for the 2025 campaign. According to FanDuel, Penn State has +134 odds to win over 10.5 games in the upcoming regular season, and -164 odds to hit the under.

The two teams that are expected to give Penn State the most trouble are undoubtedly Oregon and Ohio State. The Nittany Lions lost to each of those two programs last season, as well.

However, the game were far from blowouts, with Penn State losing to each team by eight points or less. It’s been all-too-familiar feeling for the Nittany Lions. For years, Penn State was an afterthought in the Big Ten when compared to Michigan and Ohio State.

Last year, Oregon took Michigan’s spot on the Big Ten podium but Penn State was still viewed by most experts as the No. 3 team in the league. Now, the Nittany Lions will be on the hunt this season to claim their first Big Ten title since 2016.

They’re expected to have a roster more than capable of achieving the lofty goal. On offense, Penn State is returning standouts such as quarterback Drew Allar, running back Kaytron Allen and RB Nicholas Singleton.

The trio of stars were instrumental in the team averaging 430.2 yards per game last season, the 26th-most in the country. Entering his third season as the Nittany Lions’ starter, Allar will be a Heisman Trophy candidate in 2025.

On defense, PSU is returning numerous key pieces, including defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton, safety Zakee Wheatley and cornerback A.J. Harris. Penn State had the No. 7 defense in the nation last year, only allowing 294.8 yards per game.

Penn State fans should only expect the team’s defense to improve in the upcoming season. In January, Penn State hired Jim Knowles to be its next defensive coordinator. Knowles was Ohio State’s defensive coordinator and was pivotal to the team’s national championship run.

To pile on, PSU will have plenty of fresh faces on the roster next season. The Nittany Lions’ transfer class is highlighted by former North Carolina linebacker Amare Campbell and former Troy wide receiver Devonte Ross. FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt named Penn State the best team in the country in his preseason rankings.

“They are following the blueprint of the teams that just won the national championship,” Klatt said. “This is why I am putting them in this spot. You look at what Michigan did in 2023, you look at what Ohio State did in 2024. Both of those teams had a core group of veteran players stay. They stayed and they won a championship.
