3,100-Yard Quarterback Makes Transfer Decision: Report

The transfer portal is set to close in a couple days on Dec. 28, but players are still moving all over the place, and another big move reportedly took place on Monday, when Caden Veltkamp made a decision on his playing future after he previously entered the transfer portal.

In his first season as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers' starting quarterback, Veltkamp turned in a solid season, as he threw for 3,108 yards and 25 touchdowns, both of which were tops in the Conference USA. He struggled with turnovers, though, as Veltkamp's 10 interceptions were also tops in the Conference USA.

With a strong season in the books, Veltkamp was looking to take the next step forward in his career when he entered the transfer portal. After several teams showed interest in him, Veltkamp ended up landing with the Florida Atlantic Owls according to reports that came out on Monday.

"Former Western Kentucky starting QB Caden Veltkamp is expected to transfer to FAU, Chris Hummer and I have learned for CBSSports/247Sports. The 6-6, 240-pound Veltkamp threw for 3,108 yards and 25 touchdowns at WKU this season," Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The 2024 campaign was a tough one for FAU, as they finished with just a 3-9 record and fired their head coach Tom Herman along the way. They received poor quarterback play from whoever was under center, as Cam Fancher, Tyriq Starks, and Kaasen Weisman all struggled when they found their way onto the field.

With this move, the Owls are very clearly hoping that Veltkamp's propensity for airing out the football will help open their offense up a bit in 2025. He won't necessarily be guaranteed the starting job, but after he posted strong numbers with the Hilltoppers, he will have a shot to prove he's their top option under center.

This is a big move for both parties, with the hope being that Veltkamp will be able to translate his play from Western Kentucky to FAU. And if that ends up happening, chances are the Owls will take a step forward after a horrific 2024 campaign.
