The College Football Season is getting closer. With 49 days left until BYU kickoffs against South Florida let’s get to know some players on the roster for this upcoming season. This will give fans an idea of where these players have come from and what they could do for the cougars this season. I will do one every day there is a player with that number.

Payton Wilgar

Today is Payton Wilgar linebacker JR 6-3 235lbs. Wilgar has a big heart from the way he grew up and did not have the easiest childhood. This past couple of seasons BYUTV has done a segment called deep blue for many of the athletes across many sports at BYU. Wilgar and his wife took in his older brother’s kids after his brother had some hard times. With this he has never missed a practice or a weight session at BYU.

Before coming to BYU he grew up in St. George, Utah, and played for Dixie High School. He then in 2018 walked on to BYU. After the 2018 season, they put him on a scholarship to keep him playing football for the Cougars. Wilgar has played since 2018 for the Cougars. In his career, he has played in 38 games with 156 tackles, two forced fumbles, and 5 interceptions. He is expected to once again be a big player for the BYU defense and a leader on the team. He really stepped up after Keenan Pili weht down in the Arizona St game and Trajan Pili went down in the Arizona game early in the 2021 season for the Cougars. The leader the defense was looking for when some key guys went down and some younger guys had to step up and finish out the season.

2022 Wilgar is ready to continue that leadership role for the Cougars. He has to play and stay healthy in order for the defense to help win games this season.
