5 Biggest Questions Facing LSU Football Ahead of 2025 Fall Camp

LSU football enters the 2025 fall camp with plenty of talent, a returning starting quarterback, and a reloaded defense—but also some key questions to answer.

As the Tigers prepare for another SEC grind, their path to playoff contention depends on how quickly these uncertainties get resolved.

Can Garrett Nussmeier Take the Next Step as LSU’s QB1?

Garrett Nussmeier put up massive numbers in 2024—over 4,000 yards and 29 touchdowns—but also threw 12 interceptions and struggled with consistency in key moments. While he lacks the elite tools of Jayden Daniels or Joe Burrow, Nussmeier can sling it. This fall is his NFL showcase, and LSU’s ceiling will rise or fall with his decision-making.

Backup Michael Van Buren, who saw meaningful action at Mississippi State last year, gives the Tigers a steady insurance option.

How Will LSU Replace Kyren Lacy’s Production at Wide Receiver?

The tragic passing of Kyren Lacy casts a shadow over the offense. He was poised for an NFL leap after catching 58 passes and nine touchdowns last year. Aaron Anderson returns as the top target, after leading the team with 884 yards, while Zavion Thomas and Chris Hilton offer speed and experience.

Transfers will be key. Nic Anderson (Oklahoma) brings deep-threat potential, and Barion Brown (Kentucky) is a proven SEC playmaker. Tight end Bauer Sharp could also emerge as a major contributor.

Can LSU’s Offensive Line Rebuild Quickly?

With Will Campbell off to the NFL, LSU will look to 6-7 sophomore Tyree Adams to hold down left tackle. DJ Chester returns at center, but the rest of the line must gel around them.

Virginia Tech transfer Braelin Moore is expected to solidify one guard spot.

Will the Pass Rush Return to Elite Form?

LSU loaded up on edge rushers and interior linemen in the portal. Patrick Payton (Florida State), Jack Pyburn (Florida), and Jimari Butler (Nebraska) lead the newcomers.

Meanwhile, sophomore linemen Ahmad Breaux and Dominick McKinley are ready to step up, and 355-pound Sydir Mitchell (Texas) adds bulk inside.

Is Harold Perkins Jr. Ready to Be the Star Again?

When healthy, Harold Perkins Jr. is one of the most disruptive linebackers in the country. But he’s coming off an ACL tear that derailed his 2024 season. If he returns to form, LSU’s defense becomes dangerous.

Whit Weeks, who led the team with 125 tackles, will once again be the anchor in the middle.
