5 College Football Coaches Who Could Be Fired in 2025

In college football, job security is never guaranteed.

One year you’re the face of a program on the rise—two years later, you're fighting to keep your clipboard. The reality is, coaching turnover has never moved faster.

With the transfer portal reshaping rosters overnight and NIL ramping up expectations, patience from fanbases and athletic departments continues to shrink. Coaches who were celebrated not long ago are now facing serious pressure to deliver.

No matter the situation, these five head coaches are heading into the 2025 season with a spotlight on their future. A strong fall could silence the doubters. A slow start? That might be the beginning of the end.

By the time next season rolls around, it wouldn’t be a shock to see new leadership at these programs.

Mike Norvell – Florida State

Not long ago, Norvell was seen as one of the top coaching minds in the country.

After leading Florida State to a 13-0 regular season in 2023, his job felt as secure as any in the ACC. However, a shocking 2-10 collapse in 2024 changed the tone in Tallahassee quickly.

At FSU, not making a bowl game was okay for a one-year blip, but Norvell will need to rebound quickly or risk losing the program’s trust and patience.

Luke Fickell – Wisconsin

Fickell was a proven winner at Cincinnati, even guiding the Bearcats to the Playoff. But things haven’t clicked in Madison.

He’s 12-13 across two seasons with the Badgers, and the fanbase is starting to apply the pressure.

With work needing to be done to find sure-thing playmaker and major holes across the roster once again, 2025 might be his toughest challenge yet. Another losing season could be the final straw for Fickell.

Hugh Freeze – Auburn

Freeze entered Auburn with expectations to close the gap on Alabama and Georgia.

Instead, he’s 11-14 and coming off two of the most painful Iron Bowl losses in school history.

The pressure is mounting on The Plains, and now it's up to former Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold to try saving the season.

Auburn’s standards are high, and the urgency has only intensified with Alabama still trying to crank it back up in the second year after Nick Saban.

Fans aren’t just hoping for results down the line. They’re demanding them now.

Trent Dilfer – UAB

Things haven’t gone well for Dilfer in Birmingham.

After years of consistency under Bill Clark, UAB has fallen off dramatically with what seems to be a constant rebuild.

The Blazers are just 7-17 under his leadership, and bowl eligibility feels like a long shot again. He’ll need a serious turnaround in 2025 to earn a third full season.

Brent Venables – Oklahoma

Venables’ seat is heating up fast in Norman. It's Oklahoma. Going 6-7 won’t cut it, and this year he has the talent to change that fast. There's one huge problem, though - the schedule is brutal.

His 22-17 record over three seasons is already underwhelming, and fans are growing restless.

The Sooners brought in Washington State transfer John Mateer to jumpstart the offense, and now the wins have to follow.
